Hello all! I posted this earlier in the visitor section because I couldn't seem to get a password. My post promptly vanished after about 5 min. I finally got a password from an admin though.
Here is my story, I am patiently (NOT) waiting for a litter of pups to arrive. (My first whelping, the bitch's third). Today is day 68 from the day of the 1st breeding. Now I know that it goes by the time she ovulates, not the day she is bred, but I am starting to get nervous anyway. Her temp has fluctuated a lot...never goes above 100.5 (I think thats 37.8 C?). A couple of times it has dropped all the way to 98.7 (36.7?) but comes back up later in the day. My vet told me that if she is lying on a cool floor (which she was) that could happen.
Yesterday throughout the day she had the clear mucous string dangling. But none of that today. Her appetite has been half hearted at best today. No shivering, shaking or digging though.
Throughout today her temp has slowly and steadily declined. It has been under 100 all day, and in the last 3 hours dropped an entire degree to 98.7 (36.7?) I also found her asleep in the closet this afternoon, which is something new. But still no shivering or digging. Could tonight be the night? I hope so, I'm running out of vacation days at work. Does the mucous string come after the plug is lost?
Thanks far any words of advice/encouragement!

Hi there, just read your post how is she doing??? the plug can come away afew days before but as her temp has dropped so much it looks like it will be soon... I have my sisters girl here who whelped on tuesday her temp was 36.7 ai 10am she had her 1st pup at 6.04pm,,, good luck

Well, she really didn't want much to do with her dinner...all she did was lick the broth out. She is sticking to me like glue right now.
I just took her temp again and it's back up to 99.9 (37.7) from 2 hours ago. Does it rise right before? I could see it rising if she were shivering and such. But she's not.
Not all bitches shake etc before whelping, they're all different. My friends bitch hid under the bed for a day or two before whelping and she kept trying to whelp under the bed so in the end wehad to tilt the bed on its side and let her whelp there.... Just keep an eye on her, sounds like she'll be on her way soon enough.

My girl behaved perfectly normally until an hour before she whelped, when she jumped in to bed with me, curled up around my neck and stuck her nose in my ear. Thinking that this might be it, I took her through to her whelping box where she promptly vomited. An hour later she produced her first pup! All bitches are different and (unfortunately for us LOL) don't provide us with the same signs that something is about to happen!
Have a cup of tea, and try to chill out - you'll know when it's happening! Good luck!

Well, today might be it, she is panting heavily since about 0300. Vomited once. Doesn't want to stay in the whelping box unless I am right there with her though. (I am stove up from laying on the floor all night!) But too many fans in my bedroom. Cross your fingers! :)

Any news yet?
Any news on your litter???? Steph

Yeah, anything yet. I have a lovely litter of 6 pups at the moment, they are 4 weeks old tomorrow and running around and causing havoc already. I wish I had a rich husband and plenty of land as I would love to keep one or two of them, but I can't as I've got way too many dogs as it is :d
Keep us updated and I hope all goes well.

Nothing yet. She has been panting heavily ALL day. This is going on 17 hours of straight panting. I just took her temp because I was imagining that she was panting because it was ragingly high or something. It's 97.6/36.4
Now, will it rise again before the puppies come, or not, or is that an individual thing too? I haven't seen anything that I can for sure say is a contraction. She looks uncomfortable, and shifts around a lot. Wants to lick herself at times, but doesn't seem to be able to reach it...that big belly gets in the way. So she just licks the air in front of her nose. She has refused all food, even her favorite biscuits. She did drink a little broth a couple of hours ago. So, looks like another loooooong night! :)

If she is trying to lick herself it sounds like they should be on the way. Anything?
Good luck, Hope you have someone on the end of a phone if you need someone.

Mom appears to be taking a break. I gave her some broth. I'll give her a bit longer then try to take her outside. I know she's not gonna like that idea!

I think she's finally finished! She started at 01:45a and had third pup at 02:37a. Then took a looooong "break". At 04:30a I made her go outside and walk around for a bit. That made her contractions start up again, but she didn't have another pup until 06:43a...between then and 07:07a, out popped 3 more...then nothing. Thinking we were all finished, I cleaned out the box, put down fresh bedding and stepped outside to have a smoke. Came back in at 08:10...oops! apparently we weren't quite finished, there were 2 more! So, at 09:00a I finally got to go take a nap. Ahhh. Got up at noon to check on everyone and oops again! 1 more than when I went to lay down. But now, I think she is finished for REAL! So, I wound up with:
4 males- 1 white, 1 flashy dark brindle, 1 brindle with one white spot on back of neck, and 1 solid brindle
5 females- 1 solid brindle, 2 white, and 2 flashy brindle :D :D :D :D :D :D
Everyone appears to be doing well. On the last white female (while I was out of the room) it looks like mom accidentally chomped down on one of her back feet while cleaning her up. It is scraped up and very swollen and maybe even looks broken. :(
Well, got to go call the vet and make an appt to bring everyone in.
Firstly congratulations on your litter, i do hope the little girls foot is ok??? Steph

Vet says everybody looks good. He also said that the one little girls foot should heal up with no problems, that their bones are like cartilidge at this point. Just keep it clean. Any suggestions on anything I can put on it that mom won't lick right off? I was also wondering...should I give mom a calcium supplement or not. Per her previous owner, she never had a problem with calcium with her previous litters, but then the most she had was 4 pups.
