why do people drink alcohol?

I went to a party last night and stupidly hadn't eaten that much because im on my diet, drank Bud which i don't really like and usually makes me ill........yet i still did it, i don't remember coming home but aparrently i was very sick when i got back and i still dont feel 100% now.

I know everyone always says im never drinking again but i think i actually made myself so ill this time that i really could go without it :(

It's good to not be sober once in a while... and it gives you lots of stories!

I found myself asking this question every weekend..... from the age of 17 til 19, i would go out, about 7pm, drink sometimes up to 7 or 8 pints of lager and then it was a choice of :

1/Throw up in pub toilets
2/Throw up outside the pub
3/Get in a taxi and rush home and throw up at home
4/Make it home with the lads order a pizza keep that down and then go to bed and sweat it out all night.

Then i gave up drinking lager, same as id given up drinking cider some years before.
Then for a year i stuck to spirits, then found that it wasnt wise to drink a whole half bottle of vodka before going out, drink 8 or 9 bottles of Metz whilst out, then start on the Absinthe on the way home.........

aaaaaaaaaand then i gave up drinking!

How sad? 24 and t-total!

Yup we have all been there

I usually stop when I start to feel tipsy or I just drink it slowly, don't like getting drunk drunk any more, don't find much thrill in that :(

i might be 20 a t-total

I'm ok if i drink Archers Aqua but the place we were at didnt have it so instead of drinking archers and lemonade i drank lager which always makes me ill :-(

Its actually had me thinking about my 21st which isnt till november an how it might be nice 2 do something different instead of the usual getting drunk and getting ill

I think that in 10/20 years the country is going to have a massive problem with many alcoholics and people with severe health problems :( Young people just don't understand - or want to understand  - what they are letting themselves and their families in for in the future :( :(

There is a difference between drinking at the weekends (even binge drinking at the weekends) and alcoholism.  One doesn't necessarily lead to the other.  But I do agree - as with many things, as alcohol gets cheaper and pubs open for longer and longer, there will be more people with problems.  But I don't think it'll be an epidemic.

I go out about once a month (because I'm a sad norman no mates) but luckily for me I learned my limit when I was 17 and have never gone past it since.  Also, as I don't suffer from hangovers, I feel pretty damned good about myself the next day!

The problem is that it is not just alcoholism that is the problem - it is the general health problems caused by either longterm drinking or binge drinking - and binge drinking is viewed as drinking more than the advised daily maximum :( So a woman drinking say 4 or 5 units once or twice a week MAY still be doing her body irreparable damage :(
