My 9 month old bitch decided to roll in dog poo on perpose today she only stopped coz I chased her away from it. Any ideas why she did this? Is this likly to become a habit?
My dog and all his friends do this, and yes it can be a habit. They love strong smelling messes like dead things or poo to roll in, some theorists think its related to hunting where predators roll in prey animals droppings to disguise their scent, I just think its a dog thing like scavenging. :)

All mine roll in poop, anything dead, anything thats smelly. I have one bitch that will do this more than the others. She has found dead moles, mice, once a seagull and the worst was at a beach she found a seal. Had a great time rolling in that one. Me screaming away. Then I had to go home with her stinking like death.

oh yeah she loves rolling in dead stuff to. She'll just have to get used to cold showers with a hose pipe then. I do think its something to do with hunting instinct as she has a very high prey drive.

My bitch does this, too :) I'm very used to walking along quite happily, then turning round to see her on her back with all four paws in the air! It's the look of bliss on her face as she does it, it cracks me up every time :D
Our other bitch just sniffs disdainfully and walks off. Just a doggy thing I guess!

I believe its something their wild ancestors used to do to cover their scent when hunting....the smell of the preys waste would mask the dogs/wolves smell.

It just goes to show how useless rubbing a dogs nose in its own mess is when housetraining!

She's just been out and done it again. Shes not to chuffed with me at the moment because I've just given her a shower. Maybe its no good to smell of dog shampoo when your going hunting.

What, does no-one enjoy the subtle nuances and aroma of .............. yes well, eau de pou ? and how come they're supposed to have a much better sense of smell than us and yet they have to stick their noses right in it to know what it is. I can usually tell from a couple of yards away that its niffy ;) and thats before they roll in it.
If we were really kind people we'd bottle the scent and spray it on them - Acqua di Cane, for the discerning pooch :D
Hi all
My 6 month old lan loves to roll, normally its in poo but the last time it was in a huge pile of vomit.
I got home to find that the kids had tipped out all the dog shampoo and all the baby shampoo so she was locked in the garden untill i got back from the pet shop and i hosed her down, which she also loved.

Yes my Spanish enjoy to roll in poo or something dead, especially after having a swim, so it then sticks to their coat!! Don't you just love dogs? :d
yes mine does it too. 6 month old BC who rolls in anything going and always has the great knack of getting it around his neck and in his collar and then I have to spend time washing him off and then cleaning his collar, which being a webbing one the smelly stuff always manages to get stuck. great fun and always something to look forward to. Cant wait for tonight as we are off down the beach so that they can cool down and I am so sure he will find a dead crab or something equally as smelly - wonderful fun!
