In the open show that I attended on the weekend, I noticed that the judge took notes on the dogs which gained placings. Are these notes published? If so , where?
Thanks, Naomi

Was a bit irritated to see a recent Dog World reply from Peggy Grayson to a letter from beginner who wanted a critique on her dog. According to Ms Grayson "Well, when she wins more she will get one." Not really the best way to encourage new people imo ....

I agree. Showing is an expensive hobby and I think that a written critique is the least you can expect. I feel that if you accept a role to judge then you should be prepared to submit a written critique. If you can't be bothered, then don't judge.
When attending breed shows in Italy, I noticed that every dog had a little hardbacked book and that judges wrote a critique in said book. This little book was a gold mine! Not only did it list all your dogs critiques and awards from shows in it, but also all working critiques/awards as well. Also included general information about the dog: registration number, tattoo, hip scores etc.
I thought that this was a brilliant idea :-)

Leigh, another hobby horse is fidgeting in the stables :-). I think the continental system of giving critiques to all dogs is not only a good way to inform and encourage owners, it probably does a world of good to the standard of judging. Putting things on paper is a great way to concentrate the mind.

I'm still waiting for a juding critque from an open last year where my dog won his class, BOB and Res Best in Show!
You learn not to hold your breath accept it in good faith, sometimes they just get lost and never published I've been told by some judges so who really know's what happens to them all.

Mmmm, yes Schip, I'm sure some do get lost. But some just don't get written. I'm not convinced that the sort of critiques we are used to seeing in the dog press do anyone much good, but I do like the idea of the FCI system.
I like that idea Leigh. :-) Wish it could happen here but I won't hold my breath.

Couldn't agree more Leigh on the "if your lucky shout" :D
Hopefully Naomi the Judge that judged this Open Show will send in their critiques (the write up that they have given for Keira), but I wouldn't hold your breath :(
The Guernsey Dog Club hasn't had any critiques sent in by Judges for absoutely ages. It is so frustrating for both the Club and the exhibitors especially when you have had such a good day :( And when they get everything paid to come over etc !!!!
There was a letter in DogWorld the other week, somebody writing in to complain that the Judges seem to not be sending in critiques on Shows that they have judged.

A club I'm a member of make it part of the judges contract that they write and publish a critique on the winner of each class, most do but there are always one or two who have to be chased. Jackie H

Its been said already, don't hold your breath Naomi. Its not just open show critiques that never see the light of day, its champ show ones as well. I dread to think how much I spend doing the champ show circuit each year and I count myself lucky if I see 4 or 5 critiques. If you've done well and won your class its nice to find out exactly how you managed it.

Good idea Jackie :D
I think I will mention it at my next Committee Meeting.

I got placed 1st in a puppy class at an open show, judge took ages writing down notes then nothing appeared in either of the dog papers :-( I'm convinced his notes said :
"I must remember to submit my critiques. I must remember to submit my critiques. I must remember to submit my critiques. I must remember to submit my critiques." :P

I am still awaiting Manchester Champ. shows critique for import register. I think it's awful that we had to pay exactly the same as every breed at this show, which was bad enough, but now there hasn't even been a write-up.
I only entered this show this year with my 3 dogs as it's close by, I will not enter again if they insist on charging such a ridiculous price (oh, where's my spell checker when i need it.) One of the committee members excuse was that all shows would be charging this much, how wrong cd. he be, not a single one has charged anything like this, most shows are charging around half their price.

The parking does my head in at Manchester. Struck right in the city centre, if you don't get into the G.Mex, you end up parking a long way away. Loaded down with show stuff and dogs etc is very hard when you have to get through the city centre dodging the shoppers.

Jackie I recently noticed in recent invitation to judge that they had made it a requirement to write a critique and send a copy to the secretary, this hasnt been in before. Also I have always submitted critques the dog papers but they dont always publish them specially when its busy time of the year like Crufts etc.. I always keep copies and if its not published would be happy to send a copy to exhibitors after all they honour you with an entry for your opinion on their dog the very least you can do is give one .
That's very good of you Mattie to offer to send the exhibitor a copy of their critique if it doesn't appear in the papers. I wonder if all judges would be so kind ? How would you expect to be asked for a copy by the exhibitor, just out of interest, I'm wondering if a judge would consider it rude to be emailed or telephoned ?
Not that I would have the bottle to do it like

Hi Claire I wouldnt mind at all someone asking me to send the copy it would depend on the personality of the Judge but I would write to the Judge,a polite letter saying you were so thrilled to win under her/him but disapointed the paper didnt print the results would it be possible to send an sae for a copy if it doesnt work then put the judge on your those to avoid list
kindest regards
Glenys
I'll remember that Mattie. Thanks. :-)

As previously mentioned by other people, the write ups are usually published by Dog World or Our Dogs. Our colums are prep paid in both newspapers and we hardly see any of our write ups. Im still waiting for one when my cocker got BPIS in August 2000.

my dog got reserve best of breed, waited for it to be published in dog world, it never appeared shame because if like me you keep a scrap book of all your placings its nice to have a rossette with a write up.

I have not shown one of my own dogs for number of years. I do steward and judge however. I know it is very frustrating to win and not get a write up. I have as a judge been on a number of occassions annoyed when I have gone to a lot of trouble to write a critique, to see it does not get printed!!!
The guidelines for judging require the judge to write up their critique within a specified time, and I usually get my critiques in as soon as possible, usually within two days of the show. I once decided to chase up a critique as four weks had passed since I sent it in. I was told it was too late arriving for them to publish it, and perhaps in the future i should post it sooner, that critique was sent in first class post the day after the show!
So the next critique I not only posted it but I faxed it and emailed it! OVERKILL???? No! It did not appear in one of the papers! Again I enquired and was told, "We haven't received a critique from you". So i pointed out that I had emailed, posted first class and faxed the critique, to get the reply, "Well ring back later and we will have a look for you". I rang back, was told they had found a copy of an email, and having discussed this, it was decided that on this occassion it would be printed, but in future could I send it in sooner! So don't always blame the judge, some of us do try really.

It's is comforting to know that some of the judges are taking the time to follow the guidelines...in all the time I have been showing (nearly 3 years) in Jersey and Guernsey, (we live in the Channel Islands), I have only ever seen 2 write ups in the DW or OD papers.
I just thought it was because the judges couldn't be bothered. But it seems that it is the papers that can't be bothered. If the colums are pre paid by the club that you are judging for, and the papers can't be bothered to print, they are making a fortune...
Can anyone follow this up or would it be a dead end??
