Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Miscarriage :-(

As you  know from my previous posts, my girl was mated just over 3 weeks ago and has had a discharge right from the start.  Well sadly yesterday she started to abort her litter, we're  not sure if all the pups have gone, we definitely found one foetus and my girl has continued with a bloody discharge since.  The vet has told me she may have aborted a few pups to make room as she was already quite big for 3 weeks, I just wish I had her confidence. :-(

I feel so gutted,  happy that my girl is ok, she's just acting her normal self at the moment.  We do have an appointment at the vet later, just to get her scanned to see if/or what is left.

Just what is happening at the moment, there seems to have been so many missed, aborted, reabsorped :-(

Will let you know how we get on later

So sorry to read your news - but as the vet says, she may just have miscarried one or two if she has a large litter.

Will keep fingers crossed - give her a hug from us.

Just out of interest, has this ever happened to anybody and their girl still went on to have a litter??  Like I said, she got big really quick, HUGE nipples and you can actually cup her boobs where they are that big, she just seemed to show signs really quickly.......I know the stud dog is known for siring big litters, last one was 12 with 9 surviving..........for cocker spaniels that is extremely big litters!!

I've been giving her lots of cuddles, so I'll give her a few extra today from you all.

Happened to us few years ago my bitch started to bleed heavily (though was only two weeks after mating) we were told by the vet that she was miscarrying. She kept bleeding and vet gave antibiotics but bleeding continued, 7 weeks later we got 9 healthy puppies. These were cockers as well. Hope your news is good news. Good luck.

Sharon I am sorry about your news.  Fingers are crossed for you.

I was interested to hear about stud dogs influencing the number of pups in a litter.

Let us know how the vets goes.

Hi Sharon, a Lab bitch I helped with over a decade ago, aborted what we think was approx three pups a few weeks before her due date, she went on to have 12 (!) healthy pups, we just presumed there wasn't room for them all.
Hope this turns out to be the same for your girl, most important thing is that she is okay though

I'm keeping everything crossed!!  My vet said she didn't really want to see me today, as she still has a red discharge didn't want to build my hopes up by showing me a scan with possibly live pups, so I have to wait until next week, hopefully the red discharge will go then I can get her scanned to see if there is anything left :-(

She had a course of Anti-biotics so she is still covered by those, she is absolutely fine in herself, still wants lots of cuddles, still got the bid boobies, so I'm praying for a miracle.

Thanks for the positive thoughts
Sharon

Just to let you all know that I don't think we will be having any pups, my girl has so far aborted 6 pups :-(  :-(  She still looks big, the stud dog owner said she may still have some, but I'm beginning to doubt it now.

Thanks for all your good wishes, will give more updates if and when I have any.

I am pretty certain now, no pups this time :-(  in total she has aborted 9 pups!  I'm am so gutted, I feel so sad for my girl although she is absolutely fine in herself which is  most important!

It is times like this that I wish I never ventured into dog breeding and a word to people thinking of doing it............just think long and hard, I have been lucky in once sense that I have lost a litter, it could have been much worse and I could have lost my girl too!

Hi Sharon
I give my girls wheatgerm oil capsules from Dorwest herbs.
They have it pre- mating and for 3 weeks after mating. They
say it helps stop puppies absorbing.
I had a bitch once that 3 weeks later had like brown jelly
discharge. The vet told me it was pups coming away. But I cant
say I noticed a foetus.   She still went onto whelp 8 puppies.
But I do give wheatgerm oil now because I am told it helps. I can
only say that I have not had this since using it. But that does
not mean it is the answer.  Also you have to stop it at 3 weeks
because it can then do more damage than good. If you try again
with her in the future why not read up on wheat germ oil and
try it.

I have always given my girls wheatgerm oil, up to 3 weeks post mating, then give them raspberry leaf until after whelping.  I also give Folic Acid, I was told this by a very experienced cocker breeder, apparently folic acid isn't harmful, what isn't absorbed by the body is sent out via their wee.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.06.04 07:15 UTC
Folic acid is also recommended for people, ideally starting 3 months before conception and continuing for several months into the pregnancy, to minimise the risk of spina bifida. I understand it is now routinely added to many staple foods (bread etc).
