Before i start i would just like to apologise for any ignorance which i may show in the following post, as i have not yet been able to go to a show and am relatively new to the dog world!
In the breed standard for border collies i believe it says that any colour is acceptable other than predominantly white (i think), however i haven't yet seen any picture of a winning border collie that is any other colour apart from black and white. The reason i ask is that some time in the distant future i would like to get another collie but this time i would like a KC reg BC (I have a black and white WSD) so that i could do some showing. I rather like the tri colour and red and white BC's, but although i have seen a lot of them competing in agility and obedience competitions i have never seen them win at a show. Do other colours have an equal chance of wining a champ show?
Also are some breeds harder to show than others?
Once again, sorry if  this is a really dumb question, but i suppose every one has to start somewhere! :-)

Well, don't know if black & white is a preferred colour in showing, but I know someone who shows a blue & white, and he always seems to get good placings.

It's not a silly question at all...In fact its a very sencible question!!!!  Border collies can be showen in black bi (most common) as well as red bi and redtris and black tris and red and blue merles BUT alot of judges can't see past colour (sometimes a problem in breed with different colours) and they are releated to as "colour blind" (incase you ever hear that term mentiond)

Black bi border collies do most of the winning, they are the most popular colour and there fore in the higher majority to win...judges will also be "afraid" to put a different colour up although I personally think tri border collies are lovely.  If you want to show a red then you will have no problems...most judges will give you place you deserve...you can show them.

Currently we have a red border collie puppy at our ringcraft which will hopefully go into the ring when he is old enough!!

Reds and tris will also be harder to find as most show breeders will have black bi. But if you do your homework I am sure there are tri coloured show breeders who will have the puppy for you!

Any colour border collie can be shown but as you say white should not predominate and there are collies other than black and white that win and have become Show Champions.

There are more black and white collies being shown so it is bound to follow that more will be placed. Yes there are some judges that prefer a classically marked black and white to any other colour but we have got to remember that colour is just one  factor and chosing a beautifully constructed good moving with sound temprement black and white over the same in any other colour may well just come down to the judges own personel prefrences on the day.

If you would like a Tri of whatever colour then why not go for it but as I'm sure you know with all dogs construction and temprement need to come first. :) Gillian
 

there are sometimes coloured classes for the minority colours too!

there are two red merles being shown in the ring at open shows at the moment and she is doing well with them, i don't know if she has been to champ shows yet.
