Hi somebody left the door to one of my kennels open this morning and my dog has mated one of my bitches, not that this is a major problem as i wanted to mate her next time, only she is 16 months old at present.  I have looked and pups would be due on 11th August - i am going on holiday for one week and due home on the 11th August.  If i use the "morningafter" injection would this harm her chances of conceiveing in the future.  Plse help as i am really worried.  Thank you

It should be ok for you to take her to the vet and have the injection. Just remember it will bring her season back to square one!
I can't see any reason for her to have problems, unless there is a problem within the breed. What breed is she, and isn't next season too early? If she is a large breed I would wait a bit longer. Let her finish maturing first. ;)

Hi,

Although I haven't had a need to use it myself, in your position:

- IF it's a bitch worthy of mating
- IF it's an appropriate mating
- IF it can be arranged for her to have a settled whelping with the appropriate care (as she may whelp before you get back from your holiday)
- IF it would be a major problem for you not to be able to breed from this bitch later

.......... then I'd let it run it's course.

As I say, not personal experience, but many people who've used the injection do seem to report problems with subsequent seasons and pyometra - OK, it may be urban myth, but that's no help if you do it and then find out it's true - I don't think I'd take the chance.
