do they require any kind of grooming

A few minutes with a brush every day will suit them fine. And of course they'll need their teeth cleaned and their nails kept short just like any other breed.

I don't think I've ever brushed my girl.... She's so short coated (and so often balding) that it makes no appreciable difference!  I do have to bath her every few weeks, though, as she has a disconcerting habit of rolling in anything even vaguely smelly :D

The reason to brush daily is to massage the skin to keep it healthy, which encourages a healthy, shiny coat, with no dandruff. This means that baths often aren't necessary as a healthy coat like this keeps itself much cleaner with mud and most other grime falling off. It also means you are aware of any thorns, ticks, or any other potentially nasty changes as soon as they develop. And they love the attention - it's a great way to bond and have fun with your dog!

as jg said a quick brush daily is good for them as i heard it helps there skin breath makes their coat more shiny and 9 times out of 10 they enjoy it what other reason could you possibly need
p.s. well dont complain thats what makes dogs so fun them rolling in something then rubbing on you isn't it savour the flavour lol

Hi,
I'd say Staffs need a "PAMPER DAY" at least once a week. Sal gets "done" on a Sunday or Monday mid morning.

Teeth cleaned with "doggy toothpaste"
Brushed short haired brush. Then gone over with a velvet glove - for shine.
Ears checked
Feet checked
And a general once over.

But everyday she brushed for about 5 minutes in total. As JG has said it makes me aware of anything "untoward" that may have happened.
