I have seen some wahl dog clippers at a reasonable price...has anyone used these for their own grooming sessions and if so are they man enough to do the job?????

Hi Guest, most people will recommend buying more expensive and substantial clippers, but I prepare my American Cockers for shows using the cheap wahl clippers from Argos. I prefer them to my Oster clippers, they are lighter, quieter, and don't get as hot to hold, during use. So the cheapies get my vote, and when they're broken I can chuck them out and get a new set, without breaking the bank. The ones I have at the moment are nearly 6 years old, and have never hicked.

There are lots of different models of whal clippers, for starters, from the tiny "peanut" to heavy professional quality.    The pre packaged "pet" one (like Dawn describes) suit a lot of people who have only 1 or 2 dogs.  One of the most important things to look for is if they have removable blades, which can be sent off to be sharpened, or if you have to buy a whol new clipper head when they go dull.

I've got some Wahl clippers  - I use them on the dogs, ponies and occasionally the children!!!!

Depends on the breed of dog you have, they wouldn't go anywhere near a Spanish Water Dogs coat!!

So go on ... tell ... how do you clip a GSD?  I'm curious about that one ... ...

thing is, you CAN clip any dog, question is, why would you want to?  At my friends grooming parlour last year they had a lab. booked in - not unusual, oftne get them for bath, nail trim, anal glands etc.  However when this one arrived, the peole wanted it clippped right off - A LAB!!!!!

Last year I saw a Pembroke corgi which had been clipped short, all apart from its head! It looked absolutely ridiculous. Why the heck do that? They still moult just as much because the hair falls out at the same time as it would have normally - it's just short when it does.

Gwen it was more a technique "how" than a physical "how"!!  What style? lol!?!

Hi jacky, makes you think, doesnt it?  Of course, with GSD heads you dont have much leaway on face styling, but with a long haired one you could get quite creative on body shape?  How about a Lion trim?

Depends on the dogs coat. The cheap ones won't cut very harsh coats.
