Please keep your fingers crossed For My Puppy Annie  (black lab) she is 8 months old  but has been in pain for most of her short life limping very badly the Vet reffered her to specialist he has ruled out OCD last time we went he said it could be Pantietitis (growing pains) but the medicine didt improve her she looks like a cripple walking around its so sad anyway today is big day she is having lots more X Rays Im setting off to take  her soon I really fear for what the result will be as she is getting no better
She is gorgeous and has lovely gentle temperament but has never really been a proper puppy bacause she cant play.
Some of you may remeber we lost Our Beloved minnie last year I cant bear to lose another so soon :(

Can you send positive thoughts for Annie please?

Mattie so sorry to hear about annie :-( I Had a blue cocker years ago who was very lame and the vet was not sure why but thought it was arthritis, I used to sit on the floor, lay Tess on her back (with my legs for support) and gently massage her legs. She loved it and I understand gentle massage increases the blood supply to the area and helps to bring relieve pain. I was also advised to give her a little organic honey each day, this has been used for treating joint problems for a very long time. Good luck :-D

Good luck Mattie, I know how you feel, Obi started limping at 3 months old, he was diagnosed with Elbow Dysplasia and operated on about 7 weeks ago, aged 6 months, it is so hard having a pup that cannot do normal pup things isn't it?
My Honey had Pano when she was about 8 months, lasted about 3 months at most, it is also descibed as shifting lameness as you cannot always tell which leg they are lame on.
Again, good luck, it is amazing what Vets can do these days - I could not recommend Obi's orthapaedic specialist enough!

Glad it's nothing worst Mattie, although even that can take a long time to clear up. Poor little Annie!

Best wishes, John

Fingers (and paws) crossed, Mattie.

Purdey is now on her 3rd lot of Metacam (since Christmas) and we were warned that dogs seem only to be helped by 3 lots of Metacam.   We're about to embark upon the use of Nupro, which we bought at Southern Counties.  Apparently this will take about 3 weeks to kick in - which iwll be about the time that we finish with this lot of Metacam - so I'll keep you posted on its efficacy.

Regards

What is Nupro?

Thanks everyone you have all cheered me up xx
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 09.06.04 12:44 UTC
I'll send you the details of it when I get home - the guy on the Nupro stall who sold it to me at Newbury said that it works in 99% of cases - in fact the only complaint he has had was from the owner of a 13 year old lab who could jump 3ft fences again!!

The vet couldnt say but probably  when she stops growing,Its a shame I had high hopes for her in the show ring she is quite special but never mind she is loved and thats all we can do and keep her safe.
She is now on metacam so we will see.

Mattie,

Just caught up with your thread just now. I am glad it is nothing serious and that she will be fine. I can imagine the worry though.

Take care

Hi Maddie,

When you say your dog has been in pain most of her life, how do you know she's actually in pain ? I know this sounds like a really stupid question but I have a 8 month old choc lab and I'm at my wits end. He doesnt want to go walking and he's seems to be limping on his front legs, he also seems to have difficulty standing up after resting or sleeping. He's ok when we take to the beach, he's taken to swimming really well and seems full of energy but when we take him walking he's always behind us and we literally have to pull him along. He always seem so sad and tired. I'm just wondering is if he's actually in pain or just lazy.

We've taken him to the vets and he say's there is nothing wrong with him, he's done blood test for vitamins and mineral and say's they are normal.

This is our first dog and so we don't really know what we should expect or how long we should walk him for, I don't want to force him to walk if he's actually in pain, can you please describe how you know your dogs in pain as this might help me.

Thanks
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 10.06.04 14:17 UTC
Firstly, how long are your walks?   Your lab is still a baby, and shouldn't be going on really long walks yet - using the 5mins per month per day measure, which most lab owners reccomend, he shouldn't be exercised for more than 40 mins per day at the moment (8 x 5mins).

If he is stiff, reluctant to stand, I would say that he is in pain.  If he loves swimming, maybe you should restrict his exercise to swimming - he will be exercising his limbs but it's not weight-bearing.

Try crate-resting him for a week or so, just letting him out to pee & poo,and for a bit of fuss & cuddles - if it doesntt improve though, I would be back at the vet's, asking for more tests.

Give him a hug from us

Margot

I would say that if your dog is limping on his front legs and limping after resting then there may be something wrong somewhere. It may be growing pains or it may be something else but I would take him back to the vet and ask him to investigate further.  He may need x rays to clear up any skeletal problems not just simply blood tests for minerals.  As for knowing your dog is in pain, if ANY signs are there that he could be suffering in some way I think you know.

How long has he been limping for?  My lab had a bit of a limp which thankfully turned out to be nothing serious when he was about 7 months old.
- By lou [es] Date 10.06.04 15:10 UTC
Thanks for your replies,  I would say that we probably walk him for about an hour a day - is this too much? I thought puppies were full of energy, he certianly isn't.  We don't have a crate and have never used one but I'll certainly give him plent of rest for a couple of weeks and just take him out for pee & poo as suggested, as for the fussing, he get more fussing from my husband than I do !!! he's absolutely besotted with him.

He's been limping for a couple of months really, my husband noticed it first and its getting worse his frount leg seem to be stiff, I know this might sound sill but we have marble floors all through our apartment and he really seem to struggle and sometime keeps slipping - do you think this could be the cause ?

We live in Tenerife and had him imported throught a pet shop - labs are quite rare here and there are no breeders on the Island, the pet shop imported him from Romania so I know nothing about his parents, this I now find quite disturbing as we have no information at all about him, he's supposed to be a pedigree but the pedigree papers are in Romanian (lol) so I'm non the wiser, it wouldn't matter now if he's not a predigree because he's now a member of the family and loved dearly. Its amazing how you can become attached to a dog after 7 months, I've never been a doggy person but know I even worry about him if we go out for the evening and he's left alone for a few hours.

The floors won't be helping - I know our old girl is alright outside on grass, gravel or road, but finds it hard to cope (especially in the morning) on our tiled floors.

I think I would be going to the vet for more detailed testing, but in the meantime, if you can get a large piece of vetbed (you can buy it for under £20 online, not sure how much the postage would be for Tenerife) beside his bed, it would give him more "traction" under foot as he gets up.

Margot

The floors won't be helping him.  Try and put something down if you can to assist him.

Obviously you are in a situation whereby you do not know whether his parents are hip, elbow and eye scored but to make sure your little boy is ok, I would take him to the vet again for more tests if he continues to limp and is stiff.

They are gorgeous labs - so loyal and friendly.

I worry about mine all the time.

Just be safe than sorry with him.
