What would the horsey people on this site use to eradicate Sweet itch, I have a 10 year old Welsh cob who has this, and have tried some of the potions on the market to no avail.

Years ago I looked after a pony with sweet itch and we used to put Benzole Benzoate on it twice daily. It did help a little, but there may be better treatments now.  Use a fly repellent for horses. If he is stabled, keep a summer sheet on, and using a tail guard can help, so that his back and tail cant be bitten by midges.  Have you been in touch with the vet lately? New treatments may have recently been launched?

Robinsons sell one by NAFF thats quite good ,i had a welsh sec d when i was a child ,and he got it every year ,we tryed the anti midge rugs ect ect ,but what worked best for me was a good anti midge /itch shampoo ,and Albas oil ,cos flys/flees and midges hate it!!
We used to pop a bit on his bottom ( not near any open sores!) first thing in the morning and mid afternoon and it seemed to keep the most of them at bay .
A usefull thing to remember tho is that there most active at around dawn and dust ,so if you can keep him /her  in around these times it does help , i allways used to keep in at night in winter and in and out at night only in the summer ( but then he did have a slight tendency to over eat in the summer anyway lol

Sweet itch is simply the reaction to being bitten by certain flies/midges, so the simple answer is to keep the horse away from said  insects. This can mean daytime stabling & night time turnout (my prefered method) or a midge rug from nose to tail.

Hi Guest,

I have a welsh section D mare who also has sweet- itch. After spending a fortune on many different lotions and potions , including prescription drugs, nothing worked. This year I bought her a Boett Blankett and it is the best thing in the world!!!  She has healed completely within 2 months and is not itching at all. She wears it all the time except when ridden ( although it can be worn for riding too )  They are quite expensive but worth every penny.
