- By ginastarr [ie] Date 06.06.04 17:23 UTC
hi i am looking for a lead that has two leads in one ie you can walk two dogs using one hand i rememeber seeing an ad for this lead in a dog mag about two years ago there was a name for it .it is like an extension lead with two leads branching off .

i am hoping you can help me as when i get new pup it would be great .

thank you

I got a chain attachment for the lead that branches two ways, I just call it the dual lead, from a local pet shop

Presumably this system would only work well if both dogs were already trained to walk on a loose lead? Otherwise what happens if one pulls - I was just thinking that it must be difficult to control the dogs individually?

It is called a brace lead, or brace chain, or a  hound coupling. (you can get them in chain, leather or nylon)  lots of the show traders stock them, including Luxway, who do mail order, not sure if they have a web site.  As long as both dogs are approx. the same size and well lead trained I have never had a problem in using one  the dogs dont need extensive trainin on them, just for ordingary every day use.

I was wondering the same. I have two dogs of similar size but one is a terrible puller and the younger one is learning to walk on a loose lead (and she only needs a reminder and she is right there beside me!). Having just one lead would be easier for me, but until the other dog stops pulling, (and after two years of trying it just isn't happening) i can't see how it would work as it would just undo all my hard work!

I use a dual chain on my lead, if walked separately one of my dogs will pull slightly but he walks perfectly when on the dual chain with his brother. Maybe becuase his bro is the leader of the two so he has to be careful not to upset him.

I have a nylon coupler for my two.  One lead attaches onto a hoop which then branches off so that you can attach two dogs to one lead.  I find it easier with two leads actually as they both have a full lead length to move about, otherwise they drag eachother about.

I've seen an advert in the back of the doggie mags for something called a 'super twister' - a hard plastic handle that you can attach two leads to - it swivells round so that the leads don't get tangled up.  They don't have a website but the telephone number is 01202762214 and it costs £16.95 inc p+p - price includes 2 leather leads.  No idea if it's any good but may be what you're looking for :-)

I've seen those 'Super Twisters' and wasn't impressed at all I'm afraid. I'm sure they work well, but the handles are incredibly uncomfortable to hold.

I got a splitter leash off american ebay and the leather leash to match, all good quality leather and capable of holding 2 newfoundlands or dogue de bordeaux the whole set cost $17 that was with postage as well, we have 3 sets now all are wearing well the leash is 6' and has a ring and clasp so you can use it to tether round you waist

I got three chain leads all the same length and took the handle off one of them. This gives me two identical leads for walking the dogs individually or I can clip the extra one on for walking both. This gives me two handles the main one and one from the single lead that is half way down the combined chains. Good for controlling the dog from jumping up at people they meet or crossing the roads or anytime you need the dog closer to you.

I used to have a 'twin' lead for 2 of my dogs. It worked for a while, until one decided to pull one way. That's when the nightmare begins. If they decide to go in opposite directions you really can't control them individually. The 2 girls were good on a lead individually, but not on this lead. I still have it somewhere, but won't use it again. I felt that the dog that was walking nicely was being told off when I tried to pull the other away. JMHO ;)

Why don't you try tying two leads together first (I know it's not the same :) ) This way you might get the 'feel' of it.

Why not just use a "police" training lead which has a hook at each end then hold the one lead in each hand one dog on right one dog on left with the excess in front of you; it works for me :D  If you use the webbing/rubber leads they do not slip with strong dogs or in the rain!
