Can I ask Cocker Spaniel breeders or anyone else in the know if it is considered good practice to produce a whole litter of golden cockers?

I've had whole litters of either blue roan or orange roan, no problem with that

As far as I have gathered, it is good to breed solid to solid, or parti to parti, but
not solid to parti. So a whole litter of solids (of whatever colour) doesn't sound bad.
my litter where all gold, why would it be a problem?? It wasn't a normal mating in the sense that it was a solid black (with a lot of gold or black/tan in her ancestry) and an orange and white sire. Not my choice, but ebby didn't want either of the other two stud dogs (one black/tan one gold) and as it was her first litter and she was already 3 we went ahead. All 3 pups were gold and all three including my finn are absolutely gorgeous golds (slightly mismarked though)

edited to ask - when you mate 2 dogs you don't what colour the pups would be anyway so how could it be a problem?

If you've done your research properly you should have a pretty good idea of what colours to expect. You want to avoid mismarks if possible.
:)
Hi Jean, I know you should have some idea of the colours expected, but you still won't be 100%. I know (from reading other posts of JaneS :) ) that gold to gold produce gold, but solid black to gold could produce gold, black or black/tan.
I know what you mean about mismarking - i was stuck, didn't want her to be too old to mate and this was her first litter, so as she wouldn't even entertain the black/tan stud or the gold, we were stuck. Hence the solid to parti colour mating, if I decide to ever breed again then it would definitely be solid to solid or not at all next time. Even though finn is absolutely gorgeous.

I was just curious, that's all. I have a vague recollection, years ago when goldens were very popular, and on the subject of temperament, that it was better to get a golden from a litter of mixed colours as opposed to one from a litter that had two golden parents to produce all golden pups. I may have been misinformed so I thought I'd ask here. :)
I should point out that I am not thinking of getting a puppy. Just interested in puppies of all breeds.

Gold to Gold matings (producing all gold puppies as gold is recessive in Cockers) are carried out but most experienced breeders won't do this time after time, not because there is a risk of temperament problems but because there is a belief that this will eventually lead to a fading of the colour (much as chocolate to chocolate matings are not recommended in Labradors) Years ago, a very famous Cocker breeder advised us not to breed orange roan to orange roan for the same reason (orange also being recessive) which is something we have followed ever since.
