Try teaching him to go to the toilet on command. You can train it by giving a trigger word just before he squats (or lifts his leg) and repeat it once or twice, and then praise him, he will learn faster if you do this every time he goes to the toilet. He probably won't ever suddenly pee when you give him the command, but he probably will get the idea. My Lucy had that problem.

I've spent many happy holidays with my dogs in caravans so I know the problem well Fiona. As Kate says, a command can be very useful because your dog knows immediatly you utter it that it is OK to go there. The command I use is "Be Quick" plus of course praise when they have performed. It makes life so much easier.
Best wishes, John

Hi Fiona.. :-) this is going to sound even more strange! A friend used to show irish setters, she had a dog who despite her best efforts absolutley refused to go away from home, all the others would 'be clean' to order except this dog. In the end she was reduced to cutting a piece of turf from home and taking it in the car..you can imagine the looks she got taking it out of the car and putting it on the ground but it worked, lol :-D

hi reddoor
we were thinking of getting a pee sample and taking it to the show with us that must of looked funny but at least it worked we will have to give it a try
thanks fiona

I've had to teach my dog a toilet command otherwise she wont go before training  She doesn't work well when she needs to go! If she has a rubbish session its nearly always because she needed to do something so I taught her a command which is proving successful most of the time! We use wee-wee which of course means either or to Lana :D

My young Munster wouldn't 'go' on command, or away from home. He eventually grew out of it (he'll be 2 in July) ;) I think he was about a year old when he realised he was allowed to go anywhere but the back garden. I would try taking some grass, as has been suggested, and praise him loads when he does 'go'. It will eventually click. :D

My young beagle would never go when she was at a show. We would spend ages walking her round trying to get her to go 'wee wees', but - nothing. She'd rather wait until she got home - must have been bursting.
She does now seem to have grown out of it and will go when she's out - she's 22 months.

i will get mum to try the turf taking thing i hope he dose grow out of it then it would be alot better for him he would feel more comfey mums worried he will get a urine infection because he is holding it in so long
bye bye for now fiona
