Am thinking of mating our 13 month old staffordshire bull terrior. KC registered with excellent pedigree. Black with white flash on chest & some faint brindle markings. Beautiful looking dog. Want black bitch to mate with & would like to keep bitch puppy.

please advise how to go about this or let me know any contacts
Thank you

You do know that 13 months is too young to be mated now if she's in season. You should wait until her 3rd season at the earliest, but that gives you lots of time to find the perfect dog to use, and time to have all her KC/BVA health screening tests done.

I think it's a dog they want to stud, Dawn! ;)

My first question is: why are looking specifically for a black bitch?  If it is because you believe you will end up with black pups, that is not necessarily the case, it all depends on on the genes of the breeding dogs and the genes within their parentage.  Example, my brown brindle staff bitch was mated to an identical coloured dog last summer and produced 6 pups: 2 of them dark brown brindle with minimal white, 2 black and white pied and 2 brown with larger white patches.

If you are looking to stud your dog, then you really need to speak to expert Staff breeders who will identify whether your dog is suitable as a stud in terms of his health (ensuring he has had all relevant health checks) and that his conformation is exemplary so he will be matched to a suitable bitch which will complement his breeding.

Also, you then have to consider the intricacies (sp?) of mating itself, it can be very difficult and indeed dangerous for dogs, where both dog and bitch can become injured or aggressive...do you have the experience to deal with this and assist when necessary?

Also, if it is your dog that you wish to stud, are you prepared for his personality to change and to take responsibility for the resulting pups, as the bitch's owners must also?

Ohh Lord, I'm extracting foot from mouth, again. Sorry.

This guest is offering a stud dog, assuming that it has had all the necessary health tests, it is a proven excellent example of the breed and it has a background that bitch owners require there should be no problem and I am wondering why the guest is asking on here. May be the dog has all the desired quality but the guest is inexperienced if that is the case they should approach the dogs breeder for advice and, if necessary, to remove any breeding restrictions from his registration. They may be able to suggest the sort of breed lines the guest should be looking for in a bitch.

Jackie that was awfully diplomatic :)

Guest if you are trying to offer your dog for stud I would suggest taking him to ringcraft and getting an unbiased opinion on your dog. Then if all goes well possibly or at the same time enter him in a couple of shows and get his eyes tested :)
Then you may find bitch owners will approach you, as yo'll have a dog doing some showing-health checked and a good example of the breed
