Tara has broken her toe :( All she did was to run into some very, long grass after a ball :( Never mind - could be worse. Anyone else had this - hopefully will heal in a few weeks.

Just bumping this up to see if anyone has had experience of broken toes :) Tara has broken the outer toe of her front foot. The pieces are too small to pin and were very out of position, so vet has tried to re-align them. He has warned that they may not heal back in place and worse case scenario is that she may get arthritis in the toe and have to have it amputated :( Will take 5-6 weeks to heal, so we are keeping our toes crossed :) She has an enormous purple and pink bandage on the foot, but is not walking on it yet.

Not something I've ever had dealings with in dogs but I understand it's something which often happens to Greyhounds. They can put down such tremendous power, mainly applied to the ground through their toes that the strength of the bones is just not up to it.

Having had broken fingers and toes on occasions myself I've never bothered too much. As long as they are reasonably straight I've just let them get on with it. (They can be a little tender for a while though ;) )

Best wishes, John

I broke the second toe from the little one last spring, didn't go to the doctor, and now I have a crooked toe!  Said toe was broken by dropping a 20 kilo bedside table on it's corner on my toe.  Have to say it hurt like H*ell.

One of my whippets broke a toe a few months ago. It's very painful for them at first and my boy needed painkillers for a few days, there isn't much more a vet can do other than this. It took around 5-6 weeks for his toe to mend enough for him to run full pelt on again. In the meantime the vet advised rest for the first 2 weeks, then leash walks until the 6 weeks are up. His toe was twice it's usual size at first and it takes a good few months before the swelling goes down. My lad's toe is still slightly swollen now 8 mths later, the vet says it will probably stay that way too but it doesn't seem to bother him at all now and he runs as fast as he ever did.

Miranda - one of my Munsters - broke one of her front toes 4 years ago.   My vet said the same as yours, that it was a bad break and he'd try his best to realign it, but it could be that she might have to have it amputated.

However, she still has all her toes.  She was bandaged up for a few weeks with a course of Rimadyl and has never looked back.   I still don't know how it happened or where it happened but she has had no long term problems at all.

Thanks, Christine :)

Tara is a bit depressed at the moment - she didn't like spending all day at the vets on Thursday :( Hopefully she'll bounce back when the bandage comes off.

my sisters lab broke her toe (and leg) jumping off the sea wall onto the beach last year, she has healed fine

Thanks all for the comments :) Tara is still hopping around on 3 legs and avoiding us :( She is eating fine and wants to go for walks - we are just taking her for a little one so she doesn't get jealous of Bramble :) Hopefully the soreness will go soon (she is on Metacam).

Still don't really know how she did it - she just ran into some very long grass - maybe she caught the toe on the grass. Still, what's done is done and hopefully she'll be fine :)

Thanks again

Just an update on Tara's toe :) She has just come back from the vet. They have done another X-ray and after 5 weeks, the toe hasn't yet fully healed :( The splint and huge bandage must stay on for another 2 weeks :( The good news is that it is healing in a straight position, so the splint etc is working :)

She's feeling very sorry for herself, but can't be too bad as she has wolfed down her dinner :)

Oh Daisy - I somehow missed your first post on this thread - poor Tara!

I'm sorry it is taking so long to heal, but as it is healing straight, that is the main thing.  Are you having to keep her in her crate, or is she relatively content just to stay put??

Hope she improves soon

Regards

When I was little one of our familys Afghans broke a toe whilst playing on rocks on holiday, he ended up having it amputated as it couldnt be fixed.  luckily being an Afghan he had such hairy feet that once is fur had grown back you couldnt tell that it was any different - and he still got placed at shows

Blondebird

Thanks for the reply - fortunately the splint on her foot seems to be working and the toe is mending straight. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that she won't have any problems when it comes off

She is able to go out on short walks (on lead - otherwise she would charge off and go into the stream :) ) - she can walk on it but prefers to hop :) She has been very good and hasn't tried to chew the bandages off :) She has so many bandages on to cover the splint that it is quite painful if she whacks us with it :) Fortunately we are insured as the figure of £800, on another post, is probably about the final figure :(

She is a bit sulky today - hiding under the table :)

Thanks for the reply

Our cross Lily (think she might be lurcher) broke her toe the FIRST time we took her to the park.  We got her as a rescue on a Friday night and decided to take her to the park Saturday morning.  Whilst in the green our other dog ran into her and tossed her in the air and she landed heavily on her leg.  We took her to the vets and she had 2 broken toes but as she was still very young so they decided to strap them and re-align them.  It took about 9 weeks for her to walk properly, mainly because she kept chewing the bandages off.  Anyway, 4 years on and she is fine, the only thing that changed permanently is her hair grew back grey in that area.

As luck would have it we weren't insured at the time and the bills came to over £800.  She was an expensive mutt.

But, all's well that ends well I'm pleased to say.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply :) See my other post to Loki's Mum. She has been a little angel and not chewed the bandages once :)
