Hi, hoping someone might be able to help & have budgie knowledge, I have 2 budgies , Kiwi & Soda, niticed last night that they have a bit of poo stuck round their featers on their bums, one of them had it a few weeks ago, we cleaned him up and it seemed to go away..but now it seems to be back, not too sure what to do, other than take them to the vet..but vets dont know much about budgies! anyone any tips of any food etc that might help clear this up a bit? Its really hard to see as Kiwi keeps trying to hide him bum from me!..thanks everyone!
I think that this is a sign of digestive problems, so the only thing I can recommend is to make sure your budgie has plenty of clean fresh water, lots of fruit and vegetables, and herbs, mine used to love parsley and basil. Maybe a change in diet will help. A budgie of mine had the exact same problem, and it did go away eventually, when he had lots of different fresh foods. Sorry I can't be anymore help to you
I agree with you taking budgies to the vet is useless, unless you can find a good 'bird vet' local to you who might be able to help.

Too much fresh food can also have the opposite effect and go straight through them :( although I agree a healthy balanced diet with a variety of different fresh foods needs to be given, but if the bird isnt used to fresh stuff I would introduce it gradually.
Where abouts are you ? My parents keep parrots and there is an excellent bird vet in Winchester, Hampshire. I think there is also a good one in Newbury, Berkshire. If you look in Cage and Aviary im sure bird vets advertise there :)

Hi, thanks for your thoughts, I am in Leeds..so they are a little far. The worst thing is that we have been a bit manic for the last few weeks, we have been having a new kitchen fitted and struggling to keep our heads above water really, we used to give them lots of fresh stuff..but havent for a long time now. didnt know if maybe they were a little unsettled as we had to move them from room to room for a bit..but they have ben static for 10 days or so now. I think the plan is to switch them into a smaller cage - give everything a good boil to ensure no germs are present and maybe get a different type of food..I had thought that maybe they might have had a bad batch..and then go from there. I wacked the heating up this morning to keep them warmer if they are feeling a little under the weater....just a bit bothered as my budgie Onion dies just over a year ago and this is how it started with her :-( , she was Albino tho, and it ever passed to Kiwi, so it obviously wasnt contageous and just something that was wrong with her...poor little Onion.
Maybe she's stressed aswell by the house move?
My Nan's budgie got really stressed when she had some men in to do her double glazing, he stressed himself so much he died, but this was how he started out too. Sorry to be pessimistic :(
I tried looking on a few bird health websites and I couldn't really see anything about your specific problem, but if you've got time just do a search on budgerigar health problems, and lots of sites came up.
Hope she's ok anyway :)

My female Budgie always has poo stuck to her bum and her one nostril is always plugged up. I had her on antibiotics and that never worked. I think she has alergies. I can hear her breath, but my male budgie is totally fine. I have found a difference with the poo not sticking to her bum since I switched them to Original Budgie Seed and Ultra-Blend Select and I mix the two together. I also give Spray Millet and greens a couple times thro out the week. Not to many greens cause it will cause the runs. Reading from my book and talking with the lady at the petstore (she speacializes in budgies) it was more of a constipation. This food seems to have done the trick so far. I use to feed gourmate (sp) budgie food and the poo was always stuck to the bum and when it hit the floor of the cage kinda like big clumps not the way it should be. I also keep bird gravel for them in the cage-but you want to be careful that they are not just eating that all up.
Hope that made some sense :)
