Staffordshire Bull Terriers have all the qaulities you ask for in your post. They are known as the Nanny dog in the dog world for their affection towards kids. If you want more info or any help then become a member and we can talk a bit more.

how bout a lab?  or a whippet?

You know I have never considered a Lab as small to Medium and wonder if ones perception of the size of a breed depends on what you own yourself.

It's funny you should say that Jackie!

A good friend of mine has a Golden Retreiver.  I used to think he was huge......until we got Tundra!  When I saw them together a few weeks back, the GR looks so small!

i would consider a lab to be a medium size dog.  i would say a greatdane or a irish wolfhound to be examples of a large breed dog.  but you are right, the size is all relative according to what one is used to.  i only suggested a lab because they are so wonderful around children and all people.....usually.  i have met some great labs and they are great family dogs.  i don't know much about staffies though
