My working cocker Molly will be a year old next week and there is no sign yet of her first season.  Is this particularly late, and should we be worried?  We were planning to have her spayed after the first season - should we keep waiting, or maybe opt to have her done now?  I would be grateful for some advice as I am starting to worry!  Thanks.

I would not worry, some dogs do not come in season until 14 - 18 months depending on breed, weight etc

All dogs are different, one of my shepherds came into season at 7months another at 15 months and my westie  at 7months, dont worry about it, also my vet  will not spay a bitch till 3 months after their first season, it gives their bodies time to mature, just be patient.

I have 5 cocker spaniels (not working type) the youngest started her season aged 9 months the oldest was 14 months before she got hers, I don't think it's anything to worry about, just let nature take it's course!

Thanks for your replies, they have put my mind at rest.  I met someone the other day who told me I should take Molly to the vet as there might be something wrong and she got me really worried.  But I will sit tight and stick to the original plan of spaying her after the first season.

Rosemarie, I wouldn't worry if I were you, just thank yourself lucky as my bitch had two seasons by the time she was 13 months!

As long as she is happy and healthy, sit tight.  Dogs mature at different rates just as us humans do.

Many of my breed don't have their first one until the age of 2 and then usually every 7 months afterwards, I wouldn't worry yet.

My bitch has only had 3 seasons and she will be 4 in August likewise a litter sister too.  Both are very healthy dogs and I don't worry.   Mia has decided she's a career girl anyway!  ;)
