Christine, although it maybe of no help to you, I had exactly the same probs with ad-ware. In the end I unistalled the whole programme and have now subscribed to zonealarm pro and have had no issues with. It even prevented the last bog virus attacking.
I would personally cut my losses with ad-ware go in to your control panel and un-install Ad-ware. Then on to the internet do a google search for Zonealarm Pro and download today and do a full sweep of your system.
Hope this helps. :D
Hi J/Ozz, I uninstalled ad aware on Sunday & things were fine....till I put in this stinger!!! I need to get rid of this first but can`t find it to get rid!! Thanks tho & when I`ve got rid of it I`ll loof for zonealarm pro :)

Please please anybody? Been offline since last night, got back on just now & really need help getting rid of this stinger file. I got it from Mcafee & downloaded it to desktop. It says when I go to delete it*this is a programme file, do you really want to delete, if you do you won`t be able to run or edit.*
Should I delete it or not, if I just delete will it be gone altogether or only the icon for it, what do I do?? It`s not in the in/uninstall place so I just don`t know what to do!!!!!
Helppppppp pretty please :)

Adaware should not cause you any problem C. I've been running it for a long time. I tried looking up Stinger on the Symantec site but that did not recognise it. (Trouble is, different antivirus firms use different names!)
As a thought, try booting your computer in "Safe Mode" by pressing F8 while it's booting and then run your virus checker. Some viruses cannot be found in the normal mode.
Best wishes, John
Hi J, stinger came from here
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ & just gone to the page but it`s gone???!!!!! But it was everywhere yesterday.
Anyway agent is out on job & only got mobile with not much cover but he said to just delete, hope I heard him right

he`s going to get back to me from land line when he can, could be all day tho so did delete & everything now seems to run normally & back on at normal speed with no crashing/freezing.....yet! :)
Do you hold f8 down or just press it once?
Thanks for coming to the rescue :)

Hi Christine.
I had precisely the same problem with antivir personal guard. They only way I could do any thing was by disabling Antivir during the boot up process and un-installing it when the PC booted up.
I scanned my PC with just about every online virus scanner there is, and they all came back clean, I've now gone back to AVG scanner, and the problems have ceased.
I have a feeling the problem does lie with Adaware, but its not Adawares fault, I think its Antivir not recognising it correctly, I used to try and work through PC problems to solve them, now I just dump the offending program and move on, lifes to short ot waste time on PC's.
To un-install the stinger you could try "Uninstallability" a free program thast allows you to get rid of programs that don't appear in your
ADD/REMOVE settings.
You can get it from this address http://www.alwaysfreeware.co.uk/fmanagers.html
Hope that helps
Robert.
Hi Robert, I`ve had the antivir for a while now with no probs till last Friday. I used to have norton then avg but had probs with updates, I`m connected by satellite & it would say no phone connection could be established & wouldn`t respond to commands. So sat people said stay with antivir as less headaches.
It was OK with adaware till I did the update on Friday then the probs started!! OK when uninstalled adaware then stinger caused more probs what a nightmare its been. Wouldn`t mind but all scans came back clean. Tried to find the uninstabillity tool but couldn`t, only managers.
Lets see if its gone now after being deleted ;)
Thanks for coming to the rescue :)

Arr! it's all a little clearer. "Stinger" is McAfee's virus removal tool! Adaware uses a virus like tecnology and is sometimes confused by some programs as a virus. (Spybot will sometimes detect it) so it could be that one is clashing with the other.
To go into "Safe Mode" you only need to press F8 once, at the right time. The problem is, when is the right time? I usually keep repetedly pressing it until it comes up with the menu screen.
Best wishes, John
It`s about as clear as mud to me J

Think I`d prefer the virus to all the stuff clashing to get rid of it & checking to see if I`ve got one or not :D Never even had one anyway!!!
Given me a right pain in the neck all the time I`ve been getting pc back to normal!!!
Anyways just had loads of windows open & nothing crached/froze yet, running up to speed which is more than I am :D

What i would do is to uninstall all anti virus programs then install the one you want which will give you maximum protection. Antivirus programs do clash i have avg free edition and once i downloaded spybot i had loads of problems internet soooooo slow pc slow etc.. so i changed firewall and installed an anitvirus both from Kaspersky and it detected 7 virus's. But if avg runs Kaspersky thinks its a trojan virus and all hell brakes loose so although its still on pc i don't use it and thinking of getting rid as after all it let in 7 virus's. I will say free internet antivirus is substanard IMO as i do believe you get what you pay for. Also make sure firewall is upto date as this helps alot.
Thanks Sonny, I uninstalled the stinger scan & all seems back to normal since I did thst :D
I did by the norton but as explained kept getting probs re no telephone connection so sat people recommended I use antivir & cos I`m pc challenged ;) have to stick with what I can cope with

Tell you what tho, I`ve had more probs with antivirus programmes clashing than I`ve had with virus or worms!! You`ll find it hard to believe but pc has never had virus!! Lucky or what??
