Topic Dog Boards / Health / Passed some blood with motion?
- By HAMISH75 [gb] Date 01.06.04 11:24 UTC
Hi All

Just wanting some advice really, Hamish went for his walk early this morning and went to the toilet three times on his last lot of motion there was a little bit of blood in his pooh not a lot but he had a little bit around his bum aswell, he is fine in himself no sickness and his motion it not really runny, i am not sure whether to leave him for a couple of days and see if he passes any more blood with his pooh, he has not passed anything since i doubt whether he will now until this evening but i was not sure whether i should panic and rush him to the vets or wait and see what happens. As i say he is fine in himself eating/drinking and lively enough so i don't think he is poorly.
He had some caesar yesterday and i am not sure whether this could have been the cause?
Any advice i would be grateful for
Helen

Hi Helen? :-) ..if you are the least bit worried get it checked out with the vet, you say all other things are fine ..no sign of temp. or illness...as it was the third time he 'went' my guess would be he was straining a little or has 'eaten somthing he shouldn't'. For today I would give him boiled rice with fish or chicken to give his tummy an easy time and see how he goes. Is ceaser that stuff in tins? Not my first choice I have to say but should not have caused the problem as he is used to it. Hope Hamish is doing well otherwise, so its off to the vet if you are concerned :-D

Hi, if there was just a little I would wait for the next passing.  If there was any more I would take me to the vet for advice.  My boy had a severe bout of haemorgic gastric enteritis but it started with the passing of a large amount of mucus then the blood followed.  Hope that he is OK.

Sorry, should have added, keep alert overnight in case he has picked up something and needs some attention in the early hours.

Hi

Just an update on how Hamish is doing, i took him out for a walk when i got in last night as he had not been to pooh since he passed the blood in the morning and he went and there was no blood, he ate all his tea last night and was fine, this morning i have just taken him out and the first bit of motion he passed you could see there was some blood in but the 2nd and 3rd piece he did were clear and there was no blood round his backside, he is absolutely fine in himself lively and eating/drinking okay, he has got to be wormed this weekend but i don't think that this would cause it would it?
I am not sure whether to leave him and see when he does his next lot of motion to see if it is clear of blood, as it seems to be the first lot of motion he does in the morning where there is some blood, and then throughout the day it goes, would appreciate any advice on this one.

Thanks
Helen

Helen :-) I would not worm Hamish at the weekend while there is uncertainty about his upset tummy, if it is inflamed you will make it worse. Did you feed the rice and white fish or chicken yesterday? If so and you are still getting blood I would visit the vet..I would much rather make a 'fuss over nothing' than leave what may be a problem to get worse. One day of blood ..mm two...I would not be happy. 'A stitch in time' is my motto where my dogs health is concerned. Hope  little  Hamish improves soon. :-D

Hi

Thanks for replying, i phoned the head nurse of our vets at lunchtime and had a chat with her about Hamish, she said to feed him the chicken and rice for today and tomorrow, not to give him his eukanuba as she said i should give his stomach a rest and see how he goes she said it sounds like he has got some inflammation in his bowl and that it should settle in a couple of days, if not to take him into the vet, she said if he is lively enough and happy in himself he cannot be ill but she gave me the option to see a vet this evening or to leave him another day and see if it settles, i took him out for a walk not long ago and he went to the toilet and there was no blood, but i will see what he is like tomorrow morning as this is when he seems to pass the blood with his pooh in the morning, she asked if the blood was dark red or bright red, as she said the darker the blood the more serious it is, the blood is quite bright so i said i would like to see what he is like in the morning and i will go from there. I have just cooked some chicken and rice so will give him this tonight and see how he goes. If he had passed blood at lunchtime when he went to the toilet i would have phoned back to get him in to see the vet but his motion was fine, i am keeping my fingers crossed that it may be settling down but i will keep you posted with how he goes.

Thanks again
Helen

Hi

Just to update on Hamish, well today he is a lot better, i have been feeding him chicken and rice all day yesterday and again today, he passed some blood with his first lot of motion yesterday morning but he went later in the day twice and he was clear, today when he first went this morning there was no blood and again at lunchtime he was fine, i am just keeping my fingers crossed that he is now okay, i am not sure how long to give him the chicken and rice for before i put him back on his Eukanuba so i am going to phone the vets tomorrow and speak to the nurse again and see what she says. When i spoke to her yesterday she said if i could to give him 4 small meals of chicken and rice a day so that he is having little and often which i have been doing, he absolutely loves the chicken and rice and licks the bowl clean, i just hope he will eat his biscuits okay when it is time for him to go back on his normal food. Can dogs have chicken and rice as an alternative to their dry food for a change or is it only for when they are bad?
I will keep you all updated on how he goes but i think we may be over the worse as he has passed no blood today in his motion, so fingers crossed!!!
Thanks again
Helen and Hamish

Hi Helen :-) glad Hamish is better. I would reintroduce you dry food again gradually a little at a time when Hamish has had two blood free days. Mix a little dry  into the rice and chicken and gradually increase it, if all is well continue to increase it until you are back to your normal feed. Yes it is fine to give Hamish the odd meal of chicken and rice or fish,  I would still hold off worming him though for a week at least to make sure his little tummy has settled. :-)

Chicken/fish & rice is a bland diet for when they`ve got upset tum but it`s OK now & again. If you`re thinking of giving hamish some home made meals a good book to get is *The Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats* by R Pitcairn http://www.drpitcairn.com/books/pitcairnbook.html It`s available in UK & not too expensive :)
Don`t forget to either cook the rice in the chicken stock or give it him to drink.
