My pup is going for second jab on tuesday and has been getting used to having her lead attached for the last week - 10 days. We have been trying to lead her to her food, toilet etc and dropping the lead if she starts to pull.
Question is which method is best when trying to encourage her not to bite the lead and play with it when we want her to walk?
Walking up and down the garden with a hand full of treats and the clicker works the majority of the time but when no clicker /treats are involved then she just wants to bite it and try to drag it out of your hand ;-D

our pup is just getting used to the lead on her own. Seems a terribly good achievment but I think the practice is paying off. She doesnt mind it being attached now and is only chewing the lead when she gets bored and wants to come back home.
Dunno if that helps?

Sweety...:-) your pup will soon grow out of playing with her lead..I think most pups do it at first , she will get to know it is 'her ticket' to something exciting. I would distract her by letting her know you have a treat in your hand or a toy. :-p

Sweety. I can see the logic behind dropping the lead when she starts to pull because you don't want her to learn to walk on a tight lead but you could be teaching her to pull by doing this. She says "I wanna go this way" and you say "Oh okay then, off you go". When you are not in a position to drop the lead then she'll try harder to get you to drop it.
If it is working with the clicker and treats then stick with that. Way too early to move on yet. I always recommend teaching pups to walk with you without the lead on first. Then when they know what they are doing and why the lead will be less of a distraction.

Thanks Sally, i hadnt thought of that, i will continue short but plentiful bursts of clicker/lead training and hopefully it will all come together :-)
