I purchased a newfy pup on monday as a gift for my Sister, the breeder was informaed at the time so that she knew the pup wasnt coming to me but my sis, on the Wednesday the Breeder rang my sister to inform her that her other dogs and pups have kennel cough, the problem being my sis has other dogs in the house aswell as a litter of 4 week old pups, which does mean this new pup has already infected the other animals is there anything that can be done to prevent them all catching KC. I do think it very unfair that the breeder let the pup go knowing they have KC and knowing my sis had a litter of pups also. My sis has seperated the pups from the other dogs also the pups from there mom because she has been around the newf pup. Any advice would be appreciated thanks Steph.....

Maybe the other dogs showed no signs of KC on Monday? Mind you, I'm surprised the breeder let one of her pups go to a home where there was a young litter and a possibly over-protective mum. I'd have thought the risks for the new pup were on the high side.

the breeder knew her dogs did have KC before i collected the newf pup as she told my sis they had caught it from a dog show, also KC takes around 2 to 3 weeks for the symptoms to show "Doesn't it" so as the newf pup has already started coughing then she did already have the virus before going to her new home..

But if the newfy pup was coughing when you collected it, I can't understand why your sister accepted it?

Regardless of kennel cough, we all have different bugs in our homes.  My dogs are used to my bugs and your dogs are used to your bugs.  I'm sorry but I don't think it's a good idea to bring a new dog/puppy into the home when you have a litter of pups anyway!!  I certainly wouldn't subject my pups to that sort of risk.  Nor would I let one go where there was a litter of pups.  Sorry I don't understand any of this.

i was asking for advice on how to treat the problem not get slated on if's and but's. The Facts are the breeder sold a pup who she knew had KC knowing my sis had a litter which are seperate from the other dogs but is in contact with the dam when she goes out to the loo etc..  And why do people take dogs to shows if they have kennel cough?? as that is how it was started or so i am told.. so you see anyone of you could enter your dogs in a show while you have a litter of pups at home and end up coming home carring KC. Is that really fare??????

Unfortunately dogs who never go to shows or go into kennels can also catch KC. My vet book tells me that the symptoms usually develop within 4-5 days of infection - so who knows where your pup caught it, as it has been away from the breeder for that period?

Dogs who have had KC can still be infective for up to 12 weeks - long after clinical recovery.

i have just read on a web site that it takes 7 to 10 days. but seeing as nobody can give me the advice i am looking for, without making snide comments! i will have to wait untill tuesday and ask my vet, as i am worried that it could have passed to my dogs through contact with me as i did hold the said puppy with KC. So thankyou for your support in this matter......PS not my pup my sisters by the way i just paid the £900 for it..

I don't know what advice you're looking for, though! Obviously if you or your sister is worried, the first person to contact would be the vet (I wouldn't wait till Tuesday, I would phone as soon as possible for advice). Christine's link clearly says that incubation is 3-10 days, in dogs, typically 6, and that KC is carried by other species, including cats and humans.

Going by what you have said, the breeder informed you (or your sister) of the situation as soon as she was aware of it, by which time your sister already had the pup. When your sister took the pup to her own vet for a routine health check immediately on purchase, what did the vet say on examining it?

I can't see anybody making snide comments - expressing surprise perhaps, and a bit of confusion. But nothing nasty. If you read it that way, then I apologise.

my sister has taken the pup to the vets today and is on antibiotics now.. but that still wont help her other dogs but you live and learn...

Your original post does not appear to say that she knew about the coughing!  It appears that she discovered it later and that is why she rang you.

I have a freind who is in same position, a litter of 10 pups just ready to go to all their new homes and they have got KC.  She has not been to any shows since bitch whelped, avoided all doggy get togethers, and yet they have it.

They are right as rain in themselves, eating weell and plaing, and in fact one has gone to it's new home, where there are no other dogs, as the owners were happy to do so, but the other 9 foir various reasons will now have to stay put.

It is exactly7 the same as bringing a cold home to your relatives, the infection often occurs before symptoms are evident.

I would minimise contact between the pup and the mother of the litter and herpups, and pray, as things will run their natural course.

On a brighter note I have known pups of this age and older get over KC cough with little trouble, though again it can be fatal in some very young pups, a lot depends on the Dams immunity.

the pup has only just started coughing today, if she had been coughing when we picked her up my sis wouldnt have taken her home..
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 29.05.04 16:30 UTC
Let me see if I have this straight. So the pup was perfectly well when you picked her up? And presumably the breeder's other dogs were too? The pup started coughing today (Saturday), 6 days after she left the breeder, and 4 days after the breeder told you that the other dogs had KC? If that is so, unless the breeder has second sight, how could she know they had KC if they weren't showing any symptoms?

Personally I would leave the litter of pups with their mum because her immunity (from when she was boosted before she was mated) will pass to them in her milk. Without that, they are at greater risk.

because all the breeders other dogs do have kennel cough...so they passed it to the pups, who in turn will have passed it to my sisters dogs as it takes 14 days to show.. so that means the pup was 8 weeks when collected subtract 6 days she has been in the new home subtract another 8 days, = 14 days incubation period for symptoms to show...

You don`t know the breeder knew pup had KC when she let you take it. You may find some info at the link below.

My point is YES she did know as she told my sister on wednesday that they had it when we went for the pup, which thinking back that is why she didn't have them on the yard like she normally does.
- By Christine Date 29.05.04 21:49 UTC
Wasnt pup coughing when you picked her up Wednesday?

Christine, Spain.

Just reread your post *as she told my sister on wednesday that they had it when we went for the pup,*
So the breeder told you, why did you take the pup knowing it had KC?

Christine, Spain.
- By stephanie1964 [gb] Date 30.05.04 10:55 UTC
we took the pup on Monday, the breeder told my sister on WEDNESDAY about the kennel cough...and the litter mates also having it
- By Christine Date 31.05.04 06:41 UTC
Maybe I`m confused or something but can`t see why the breeder rang to tell you about KC if she wanted to hide it from you/sister.

Hope pup/s are OK.

Christine, Spain.
