Topic Dog Boards / General / Unlucky day for walkies!

Had bad luck today out walking my two older dogs - Cody, who's 2, got attacked by a dog round the corner, then 10 mins further on got attacked by another dog.  So glad I had him on the lead, so the owners were able to come and grab their dogs pretty quick.  One said, ooh he's never done that before (his dog that is).  Anyway, Cody's a really friendly dog, but was really on the defensive after that.  And how things come in three's!!  10 paces away from our house on the way home, and a third dog comes flying across the road out of nowhere to have a go!  Poor Cody, and yet they all ignored my collie Sherrie.  Think it was a boy thing.  Needless to say, I'm not going out again today!!

Poor Cody, is he ok? I have read a few too many reports lately of dogs attacking dogs, including a puppy, that I think I will be too afraid to take my pup out for a walk! Only a few weeks ago an akita spent far too long sniffing my older dog while we waited for his 'young' owner to catch him up and I was petrified that Missie would snap at him, (I could tell she wasnt happy with this) and then she could have got seriously hurt. I still have nightmares over what could have happened. I'm sorry to say I've been a bit of a coward and will only take her out late at night just round the block, but I really am scared to take my pup out now. Hopefully I will overcome this as I dont want them to miss out on running around the fields or over the park. But the more I read of attacks, the more I think I will leave it a bit longer. I know it was only one dog and one stupid owner but there could be more. Oh dear I seem to be working myself into a stew about this, sorry to go on.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I hope your doggie is OK and doesn't suffer any ill effects from the memory. Is there anyplace to walk where it's not as likely to run into this sort of thing? Hopefully you can reassure her with some meetings with friendly dogs that you know. I do wish you the best.

Poor Cody they were all out today, eh? Tomorrow will be better I hope :)  Missie try not to worry too much as most of the folks you meet with their dogs are great, just as you never read of the thousands of successful air journeys made daily, its the exceptions that get most publicity, so it is with dogs . In the year Ive had Morse Ive made more friends than in the 6 other years living in the neighbourhood, and theres only a couple of dogs we take sensible precautions around - just a reliable recall really. Chill.

thanks lorelei, I've just had a word with my mate and shes coming to call for us tomorrow with her two dogs to go for a walk, I dont mind other peoples dogs when they are on a lead its the ones off lead that I worry about cos that particular dog, who lives local, had no recall at all! Still like you say it is the exceptions that get noticed and after all I have had dogs all my life with very few incidences. maybe I'm just worried cos I've never had one from a puppy before and they are so defenceless arent they? So I will try and take your advice and 'chill' :)

Cody is fine, thanks - was just so glad I had him on his lead, as he's usually off lead.  It was just so odd, as I've been walking this route for many years now, and something like this has never happened.  I'm just a bit worried that he will be on the defensive now, so I hope he's not going to be thinking of getting in first next time we meet a dog.  It is even worse when a dog goes for a puppy - so I do think you're right to be careful.  My friend always says it's a bad dog that will go for a puppy or a bitch, and I think he's right!  All you can do really is anticipate and keep your puppy by you if there are dogs around that you're not sure of.  I don't know why a puppy should be seen as a threat by some dogs, but it does happen - I know with my own puppy it has!

Poor Cody i hope hes ok Hilda. Were they local dogs? theres loads of visitors around at the moment saw loads setting up camp last night. The beech was busy with dogs tonight as well .I'm up the hillside tommorow far from the madding crowds and there sun crazed dogs.

Hi Callow,
Yes they were local dogs I think - one of them was actually with three kids, and they didn't have a lead for him, just had to grab him and hang onto his collar whilst he was snarling and carrying on - why do parents let kids take an iffy dog like that out I'd like to know!  Anyway, we're off to Barkby later, so hopefully Cody will have forgotten about yesterday!

I hope Cody doesn't become afraid of dogs after that day.

I was at a show with Chance today (got 3rd) and decided to take the dogs round the woods for a walk when I picked the 'girls' up. We were almost back at the car when 2 dogs suddenly appeared out tof nowhere, and it looked as if they were going to have a go at Chance. Thankfully he came back when I called him. These dogs were owned by the same people whose dogs tried to hamstring Chloe 5 years ago, so it doesn't look as if they've learned anything yet. :( Chance had spent several hours beside good types of this breed and this happens.

Hi LindyLou
Well done at the show today!  It is unfortunate that some people can't control their dogs.  If my dog was one that just went for dogs for no reason I wouldn't be letting him off lead round others, but I guess not everyone thinks the same!  Cody went out for a training lesson today, so he was on lead, but he was certainly different - every dog that went by got barked at loudly.

Chance goes running up to dogs with a 'Do you want to play?' look on his face. I usually walk him nearer to home where he knows all the dogs. This was new ground for him, and he was a bit unsure. The thing was he had spent some time earlier in the day with dogs of this breed and he obviously thought that these ones were friendly too. He learnt a valuable lesson today. I'm just glad I had Chloe (his mum) on a lead due to her being speyed earlier this week or I think she might have retaliated. I've since found out that one of these dogs WAS one of those that attacked her a few years ago. Don't think I'll be going back there again.

How's Cody? Has it affected him? Or is it too early to say?

Oops. Just re-read your last post ;)

I hope it doesn't affect Cody long term.
