Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Barf - which is the best book ?
- By ClaireyS Date 27.05.04 13:10 UTC
Ive got a list of books which I think Tohme put on one of the posts and I dont know which ones to buy, I would buy all of them but im sure most of them cover the same stuff.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to which one is best for a beginner, on my list are :

The ultimate diet for dogs and cats by Kmythy Schulze, The BARF diet by Dr I Billingshurst, Give your Dog a Bone by IB, Raw Meaty Bones by Tom Lonsdale

any suggestions ?

Claire :)

I put them in order of preference based on ease of accessibility, and logical sequence etc.  Be interested in others views though.

I have the three Billinghurst books and use "Grow Your Pup With Bones" the most.  I also have Kmythy Schultze's book but have not read Tom Lonsdale.  The only reason for the latter is that his website at the time was dedicated to abusing the dog food companies rather than giving useful information so I naturally assumed his book would be the same.

Could anyone who has Tom Lonsdale's book let us know whether it focus's on giving information or decries those who don't feed his way?

I have his book and although there are some good bits in it you have to wade past loads of "other stuff" first.

If you had a limited amount of money and the reason you were buying a book was solely for good, down to earth, simple advice about menus, meals, nutrients etc then Kmythy's would be the one I would go for.

IBs books are interesting and informative, although I would take issue with some of his view points, but they are appallingly badly written IMHO :)

Oops, did not really give you an answer; is it worth buying, not unless you are somewhat "diet obsessed" like me :D

i think they are written in afunny, easy to understand way!!!

I agree about badly written - perhaps they should be entitled - Rambling thoughts of **** then the title.  They have some absolute codswallop in them and if you read all three together you can see how his views on certain things change.

I would say buy two so that you get a balance rather than the extremes of each author.  If you have a puppy or are interested in breeding make one the Grow Your Pup book or if not the Barf Diet and the other Kmythys.

I think I will just stick to the ones I have for now unless I see TL's on a second hand stall anywhere <g>

I am not obsessed with diet - have too many other obsessions to keep me occupied :D

Sue Johnson's Switching To Raw is good, but not available in the UK I think.

Ok, I have ordered The ultimate diet for dogs and cats by Kmythy Schulze, The BARF diet by Dr I Billingshurst then I read Keriokes note about feeding puppies so I added "grow your pups with bones" I have now spent £40 on books - lets hope I find time to read them all :D :D :D

I have been having trouble with him having the runs lately - I think ill start another post on that though !!

Thanks for your replies

I`ve had lonsdales book for a couple of yrs now & still haven`t managed to read it all thru, I keep falling asleep after a page or 2! :D
A book I`d like to have is *It`s for the Animals* by Helen McKinnon. Herad a lot of good things about it but it`s out of print at the mo, waiting for it to be re released.
I still think Pitcairns *Complete Natural Health Care for Cats & dogs* is terrific value not only gives nutritional contents of most foodstuffs but also h/pathic remedies for ailments, lots of useful info :)
Have Grow you Pups with Bones &Give your Dog a Bone, they are ok. Shcultz is better tho. :)
Juliette de Bairacli Levy is the best for me tho :)
Happy reading.

Aw nuts, im going to have to save up and buy some of these books i think......

The library is definately OUT, i owe them £20 for the Grow your pups with Bones, which i got and someone had spilt tea on it, and like a fool i didnt say anything when i took it out..... they blame me and i have to pay, and until i do, i cant have any books! (and tbh i dont want to pay for it, cos ive read it now, and its not worth that much m oney!)

What billinghurst has to say is good, sadly he has made three books out of maybe one books worth of info, the king of the ramblers is he!

Might have tos ee if my mum will get me a book out on her library card........

Blondbird,

I stuck a list up a few weeks ago but based on the ones you listed I would actually put them in the order you have listed them in.
