I have a 10 week old rottie puppy who has been diagnosed with sarcoptic mange/scabies, we have been given aludex by our vet to treat her although she is under the age requirement for this specific treatment (and we use this at our own risk), she has now had 2 bath's with the aludex and the scratching is getting worse, it is now to the point that when she is scratching she is squealing with the pain, she also has been prescribed with antibiotics for any secondary infection she may get from the scratching... I am taking her back to the vet's tomorrow as I am not at all happy, maybe I am not giving the aludex time to work properly but I can't bare to see my baby in so much discomfort... I was just wondering if anybody could give me any tips on some decent shampoo's that I could use to clear her coat of the flaky skin that is caused by her problem...
Hope someone can help with a little info if at all possible...
Thank's
Gaynor.

I though Aludex was used to bathe dogs with Demodectic Mange not Sarcotic!! Perhaps I'm wrong - it has been known lol.
You could try Stronghold if it is defo Sarcoptic. That is often used to treat it and can be used as a preventative as it is also a Flea/Worm/Tick treatment.
If it is Demodectic you dog should have had a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. It can then take from about 6 weeks plus to clear up, another biopsy will confirm this.
Good luck at the Vets tomorrow.
Steph
p.s I believe that if you are using the Aludex weekly then you shouldn't shampoo her in between. Be very careful with the Aludex if you are doing it at home, our Vets would do this for us.

Hiya Steph...
Kara (our rottie) has had a skin biopsy done to test by the vet and she definatley has Sarcoptic, I understand what you are saying about the vet doing this treatment, our vet was also concerned that kara is so young that they advised us that this treatment is not usually given to puppies under 12 weeks old but she has such a bad case of Sarcoptic that they advised us to try this treatment out but at our own risk (I just hope we are not doing her more harm than good) we are following the guidelines that our vet and the instructions on the lable tell's us rigourously, and with extreme care, although kara is on a lower dilution of Aludex...kara has had 2 baths in Aludex now and like I say the problem for her is not easing any in fact it is making her itch more now and she is squealing due to the itchiness bless her...
Oh and Steph, sorry to be ignorant but is Stronghold another shampoo that I could ask the vet's to let us try or is this just a normal shampoo that we use... I won't be bathing kara in any other form of normal shampoo until the vet's tell's us to do otherwise... Thankyou for taking time to reply and I will let you know what the vet's say's to us once we have been later this morning...
Thank's Again...

Stronghold is a 'spot on' treatment. It is place onto the skin between the shoulder blades, a very small amopunt of liquid from a tube. It's like Frontline!

Mention benzyl benzoate to your Vet. It was used for scabies for years before the "modern" treatments!!

Never heard of Aludex being used for this type of mange, has anyone else?

Date 25.05.04 06:36 UTC
Me neither Jackie, that's why I thought it was Demodectic!!!

Hiya Steph/Jackie...
I have just been on www.intervet.com to check out what Aludex is actually used to treat, I did this though as soon as we got back from our last visit to our vet's and it is there it states that Aludex can be used to treat both Sarcoptic and Demodectic Mange...
I dont want to be harming my darling so everything the vet give's to us to try I always read up on it before I begin any treatment...
Thank's

Demodectic does not itch, and is not able to transfer to people.

I agree about the itching. Could that be caused be the Aludex irritating the sores caused by whatever 'mange' it is. I'm thinking that if the poor dog has scratched so much she might have open sores, that would cause stinging as the Aludex entered. Poor thing.

If this is Sarcoptic, I suppose you'd better let her breeder know. I am guessing that you haven't yet taken her out due to her age and that you and your family don't have Scabies (I think you would know - very itchy), then the Mange most probably came from the breeder, it could be that other puppies are infected.

No we have not yet taken Kara out. We have been in contact with the breeder to inform her of the situation but to be a little bit honest and frank she does not seem to be at all bothered by this problem... When we went to buy Kara there was only her and her sister left out of a litter of 10 puppies, obviously we saw Mum & Dad, and they both looked fine in themselves, but then again so does Kara now, the only way you can tell she has this is when you see and hear her squealing and scratching... (All theses puppie's and Mum & Dad lived outside in a barn)
Our vet has told us that this could have been picked up on in the early stage's had these puppies been vet checked earlier... We did ask when we bought Kara if there were any health issue's or problem's but there breeder said NO, the only way that we found out Kara had this was when we got her home and gave her a bath and you could feel the scabby patche's under her coat, so straight off the the vet we went... I have spoke to the breeder recently again about Kara and to see if anyone else has been back in touch with regard's to their puppie's but she said no (like she's going to tell me the truth) I have asked her if she would help a little toward's my vet's fee's as these are at the moment running into hundred's of pound's her reply was no sorry it isn't my problem... Although money is no object in getting Kara well again it just make's me so angry that out of the 6,000 pound's the breeder made from these puppie's she has no real heart or compassion for her dog's/puppies at all, at the end of the day I think the situation for her is her dog's are money making animal's pure and simple as that...
hi gaynor
i hope your girl gets better soon. why cant people leave the breeding to those who are trying to make this breed better oooooooo makes me so b*****y mad. i no somone that was breeding (back street)and lost a bitch at christmas she was having her 4th litter and lost them all coz she had them to early, then the mum got an infection and they lost her too she was only 4years, NOW they are looking for another bitch but they want a 8 week old pup so you can see whats going to happen there. another money maker:(

Gaynor, most reputable breeders give 6 weeks Pet Plan insurance with their puppies. Your Vet bills would then be covered for this.
The pups + Mum & Dad in a barn doesn't sound very inspiring!

Hiya Val...
This lady was meant to be a reputable breeder, she lived on a farm hence I think that is why the mum, dad and puppie's lived in the barn... She never offered me any insurance though...
By Val

Sorry to hear that Gaynor. Such a shame because Petplan Insurance is given free so there really is no excuse for not providing it, unless the breeder doesn't adhere to their requirements!!
Can I just say to anyone looking for a puppy at the moment, bear Gaynor's experience in mind and ASK about insurance - it makes for a VERY expensive puppy if you have a couple of hundred pounds worth of Vet's bills in the first couple of weeks of bringing your baby home!! :(
Another thing to ring alarm bells is if the breeder owns the stud dog. If they tell you that they've been planning to bring these two lines together for the past ...... years, then that's fine. BUT if they've bought the dog to mate to the bitch, proudly telling you that they are not related, then think again!! They are just breeding to produce puppies to sell!
Most of us try to produce the best puppies that we can from every mating. Rarely that means using the dog at home! For instance I travelled 7 hours each way to produce my latest litter, passing many nice dogs on the way, but that was the dog that I thought would make the best pups at this time with my bitch.

Hiya Val...
Well as you will see I have posted on here just exactly how Kara got on at the vet's... And I do agree with you Val, I cannot tell everyone enough... PLEASE, PLEASE be aware of the breeder's that you are all going to be using, I am not saying that all breeder's are bad just the odd handful that let the good one's that are out there down...
We have spent alot of money on our baby since getting her home, I have tried to take private insurance out on Kara but until this illness is cleared up no-one is willing to insure her, I am just lucky at the moment that money is not an issue here in getting our baby better, but for other people this may not be the case...
I will keep you all updated as we go along our slow journey in getting Kara well again...

Fingers crossed for you Gaynor and Kara.
Wasn't posted as critism Gaynor, I think that you understand that.;) Thanks.
I just never miss an opportunity to try to point puppy buyers in the right diresction and I know many folk who don't post read these boards!

Hi Val...
I know that it wasn't posted in critisism, and I didn't take it that way at all... Just that we were unfortunate in the breeder that we chose, and if and when we decide that we may wamt another puppy (playmate for Kara, and this certainly wouldn't happen until we have her fit and well with an all clear from our vet) we will know to check out the breeder in further depth that we did do this time...
If we are fortunate enough to stop other people from making the same mistake as we have done this time round, then at least we know that it is not all bad, like I say we were just unfortunate this time round... All I can say again is PLEASE, PLEASE check out the breeder of your puppy before you think of buying from them...
Gaynor...
P.S... Kara is and will still be wearing her little baby vest's for a while yet, cos she seem's not be
scratching at all now...

I hope all went well at the Vets today.
Sorry to hear that the breeder doesn't seem interested in the puppies now they have left. How sad!
When my puppies leave I give them my Vets details so that their new Vet can ask for the records to be sent on. Obviously I don't know how many of the new Vets take this up but at least I offered. It is also a way of proving that I am telling the truth. I know this is of little consequence to you now but perhaps puppy buyers could ask the breeder for Vets details. IMO if I was selling an older dog the records would need to be transfered so why not do it for puppies too.
Ah well, hope all is well and the itching has stopped.

Hello Steph & Everyone...
Well been back to our vet's with our baby and she seem's to think that Kara is a little better in herself, her crusty ear's have now disappeared, althought the scaly bit's seem to be spreading a little more and where she has been nibbling at herself she has made herself rather sore (I could see that though) I am to bath her in Aludex in another 3 day's, she also has to keep taking the antibiotic's just in case she get's secondary infection and also she now has to have a quater dose of anti-inflamatory cos of the soreness, the antibiotic's she is on are Cephalexin (qater tablet twice daily with her food) and the anti-inflamatory tablet's are Rimadul (quater tablet twice daily with her food)...
I think I may have come up with my own solution as to ease the itching a little, it will sound funny and you all may laugh but anything to help my little girl... I have been shopping for her and I have bought her some baby vest's with the popper's on them, so I can leave the middle popper open for her little stump, she let's us know when she want's to go to the loo so we shudn't have any problem's there (if we do then it wont matter the vest's will wash)... She has one on at the moment and she look's so sweet, I wish you all could see her, and guess what.... she hasn't tried to scratch once since I put it on for her, so finger's crossed hoppefully this may help her a little...
Well I will keep you all posted as to Kara's progress, and once again thank-you to each and everyone of you for your help, kind word's and suggestions...
