Topic Dog Boards / Health / My boxer has a lump.
- By janie2674 [de] Date 03.05.04 22:02 UTC
Hi went to my vets today in Germany as I found a lump in one of her nipples, my vet has advised me that she should be spayed as it could be connected to the lump I found  (hormones)..I am really scared for my boxer as last time she was put under she did not cope very well with the anaesthetic and was quite poorly...I'm really worried about the lump as well just hope I have caught it in time..has anyone else gone through the worry I am going through at the moment..

P.S the lump is being removed when she is spayed on the 24th May 9.00am..

Jane...really worried :(

Jane, I'm so sorry you're going through this worry. Why are they waiting so long? It's going to keep you worrying more and if it turns out to be malignant, shouldn't they get it out sooner?

This is one reason, I am all for spaying and neutering when dogs are around 6 months.

I send my prayers and best wishes that it turns out to be benign and that all goes well with the surgery. If it's like people, chances are that it will be benign, as a much higher percentage of lumps are.

Truly,

Carrie

Sorry to hear of your worries. I have had Boxers operated on (one with mammary tumors) so I can guess how you are feeling.

When you take her to be spayed make sure that the vet does NOT use ACEPROMAZINE which is a pre-anaesthetic sedative. Most vets are aware that this is dangerous for Boxers and will use a safe, alternative, tranqillizer.

Also, there are various anaesthetics available. Tell your vet to use the one most suitable for your dog, even if it is the most expensive. The same applies to suture material.

I do hope that your worries prove to be unfounded. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Carrie and Shadowboxer for your replies, made me feel abit better...ref why aren't they doing the operation earlier is that my german vet does not seem that concerned about the lump which is the size of a big pea and it does not feel attached to the nipple itself.I am sure if she thought it should be done now she would as she is a very good vet, in her 50's and speaks very good english. The vet is mostly concern when I stop feeding my dog the day before the operation as boxers and bull dogs have digestion problems (take longer to digest their food than other dogs). I will last feed Dixie 11.30am the day before just making sure she has digested the food properly..A friend of mine lost a beautiful 9 month old bull dog on the operating table a couple of years ago as the dog was sick whilst being under and the food went into his lungs so he drown in his own vomit which is really a scarey thought.

Thanks also on the advice of the pre-med issue I will ask what they will be using..

I will let you know how she gets on after the op and thanks for your kind concerns..

Well today it all happened for my boxer....Dixie had her op to remove lump from her nipple also was spayed and on top of that she had a lump removed from her shoulder which the vet was keep telling me that it was a wart but turned out to be a tumour of some sort which is being sent off to the lab.She is in a right sorry state and I feel so sorry for her.She has got to go back to the vets tomorrow to check on her tummy etc etc etc....

Love to have any advice on how to make Dixie feel abit more comfortable.

Hello Jane,

Pleased to hear that Dixie has come through her op okay. They do look rather pathetic just after surgery but I am sure that within 24 hours she will be feeling much better. Dogs have amazing recuperative powers. Just keep her warm, a little water and a little bland food if she wants it, plenty of rest and as many cuddles as she desires. Did you get an Elizabethan collar to stop her interfering with her stitches? If not, might be an idea to get one from the vet tomorrow just in case the stitches start to irritate her.

Hope that the pathology on the lumps reveals nothing of importance. Do let us know the results.

Best wishes

Hi Shadowboxer...Dixie was much better yesterday and even better today, she doesn't look to sad now if that is possible with a boxer. She had her lampshade on(Elizabethan collar) and really hated it and ended up cracking and splitting it!!..Dixie went for a check-up and the vet is pleased how she is getting on.Stitches are due out a week thursday and hopefully get the results for the lumps..

hi janie2674  my boxer (roxy) is 10 yrs old  & she has a lump at one of her teats about the size of a ten pence piece .last year i asked my vet about it & he said it was  just a fatty lump (but it was only pea sized then,& he said i didn't have anything to worry about) but since then it has grown, she has also had a phatom preg & blood blister on her ear(which vet siringed/ drained 15 may 04.) i feel that everything is happening to my girl at once, what should i do about the lump? i am in two minds  do i get a biopciy & risk it spreading or do i keep monoriting to see if it gets any bigger or what, to be perfectly honest with you i am s******g myself incase its bad news .i'd be lost without my girl.

Hi caramac I know what you are going through with the worry of Roxy..If it is worrying you get it checked out even though it could be nothing like it was in my case but it is best to make sure as you know boxers are prone to lumps and bumps..Go with what your heart tells you..Keep us up dated on Roxy..My dog has fully recovered now but I am so glad I had the lumps removed just to make sure as like you say I don't know what it would be like if I lost my girl (my best friend)..

Jane and Dixie..
