I am looking to mate my Rough Collie/Tamelia Blazing Thunder (Blaze) and I don't know where to start.  He has never mated before.  He is 6 years 5months old and is a Tri Colour and is registered with the kennel.  His Great Grandfather was  a Crufts champion called TRAMP (Blue Mearl) and he comes from a very strong family history of show champions which can be confirmed by the Kennal Club.

Does anybody have any advice or even a bitch they would like to mate.  I live in the South East London area.

To start your dog must have had his eyes tested & be clear of having PRA/CEA(he should have be screened for CEA before 12 weeks of age as the condition can "go right"after 12 weeks & appear to be normal)

He should also have had his hips x rayed & scored for HD

After these health checks you would need to wait for people to come to you with a similarly health checked bitch with a pedigree that ties in with your dog's pedigree

If your dog is willing to mate a bitch(six is a bit late to start using a dog for the first time)be prepared for his temperament & character to change & also you need to be prepared to be jointly responsible for any puppies he produces from birth  to death & also if your dog was not eye tested before the age of 12 weeks & any of his puppies have CEA be prepared to be sued for being responsible for producing genetically defective puppies that an early eye test would have detected in your dog, failure to test at the right time is viewed as neglience in law

You will have to remember that because he comes from a line of champions does not mean that he is any good for breeding himself, have you been showing him, if so, would have thought you would have been approached to use him by now if he is good enough. To be honest 6+ is too old to start really and you will need to know what you are doing or employ someone who does as you will not want either the dog or bitch hurt during the process. If you are prepared to do the needed health tests and to take the risk of a temprement change then why not contact his breeder who may know of some one who would like the services of a dog from their lines.
