So I thought I would at last venture in to the world of dog showing and so after speaking to a man who on the phone seemed enthusiastic about New Members I made the 3 1/2 hour jaunt down to see for myself yesterday.
After a pleasant drive down to devon with a few stops inbetween to stretch doggy legs we arrived in a field with about 15 others, I introduced myself and my dog and asked would it be alright for us just to watch and for Prince to stretch his legs, I was told this was a bad idea and to get Straight into a pegged out square with the others there (5 dogs). The gentleman doing this obedience training put me in the mind of a power mad little hitler who thought only his methods worked and shouted at all who couldnt or wouldnt match up to his idea of perfection. Now as I had tried to explain to these people my dog after being stuck in a car nearly all morning did not want to go straight into obedience manners, so he played up this I will admit too, but as I see it he was in a strange place hadnt really been out of the car all morning and had never been in an outdoor place like this without being able to walk and play I should think any animal at first is going to be frisky.
Well when he would not sit I got bawled at and then Prince got taken off me he just pulled the lead from my hand and then he slipped a choke chain round his neck and proceeded to show me how to hang my dog to get his attention and make him do what I want. Now I am afraid I did not take kindly to this man manhandling my dog he had him at one point suspended in the air by that bloody chain with the dog gasping for breath and his paws scrambling for some sort of land. THIS HE TOLD ME IS HOW YOU TRAIN A DOG FOR THE RING And As A Pet , I must admit my reply to this was not as polite a few profane words peppered the air, the upshot being that me and Prince left 10 minutes after arriving .
Now i know i was probably not totally in the right to be rude to the oaf but surely most Clubs allow you to watch the first time so as not to get you into this type of situation?
Also my previous obedience training takes place in a club where all the dogs are treated nicely and given titbits, or the other clubs in the AREA use clicker training so my reaction to this might have been over the top.

What a shame - your poor boy :( Hope he gets lots of positive interactions now, to make up for that b*ll*cks for brains idiot!
You had every right to get rude with the person who was supposed to be in control. Report him, he shouldn't be allowed to get away with that sort of treatment to your dog. :-( It makes me so angry when there are still people out there that can get away with that sort of thing and charge for it.:-(

Dare I say it that I got quite upset one week at Copper's training/obedience class as I thought he was being very good but hmmm, either him or I was just not doing it right. Sometimes I felt a bit intimidated. However, I wasn't the trainer so I persevered and we did get a rosette on the last day - and to be fair, I think Copper's obedience did improve.
I would say if you're not happy, leave. Not everyone trains the same way so just go and find someone you're happy with.

I don't think it's as easy as just saying, "if you're not happy, leave!"
Jane and her dog travelled 3.5 hrs, just to have her dog throttled for a bit of high spirits on finally exiting the car....if this club is a member of the GSD breed council, and I believe it is, I'd certainly be reporting this little hitler! You had every right to be rude, Jane.
