my stafford is hairyier than the average staff.
i ahve seen both parents n they r fukk pedigree wiv short hair.
any one know why this is?

Is your Stafford KC registered? If not, then maybe the dog you were told is the sire, actually isn't ...

hi i breed my dog so i know who is perants are and they both have very short fur but his is a little longer (i dont know why) but his pup's fur is like the grandperants and mother very short.
could it be something about the time of year they were born as my dog was born in December and the pup's in March

No, hair length is down to genes and not date of birth.

Hi Staffi lover, are you saying that you are the original guest poster and the dog you are asking about is one of your own breeding? If so, as you will know, it must be in his background somewhere and I am confused about the original question. Or have I missundersood what you are saying.

Well,
Presumably there is a dog somewhere back in the history of either of the parents that had longer hair. This gene has been passed on and has appeared in your dog.
Since you seem to be saying that you have bred from this dog as well, then i wouldnt be surprised if you have another pup at some time that has longer hair than is usual.
Not entirely sure on the genetics though but wouldnt both parents have to be carrying the longer haired gene, and if both parents had short hair, t hen they would both be carrying a recessive gene for long hair. If you ahve bred a longer haired dog to one carrying a recessive gene for longer hair then you will get long haired pups.
(i think?)

thought it had nothing to do with the time of the year but i could not think of any thing else to say ;)
and i thought i should add that when i say my dog has longer hair i mean its about 1cm long where his mother and father hair was about 1/2cm long. it only seams longer to the touch you can not see it with the eye. i dont know if this is what the guest meant but its what i thought he/she meant

I understood the guest to mean that his/her staffie had hair more the length of a labrador than the short, smooth coat of a 'normal' staffie ...

hi Jeangenie
if that is the case i would say there was a cross in there some where, as i think mine dog has long hair and its only a 1cm long.

This where we need more input from the guest as to what they are calling 'long' hair!

OK, must have miss-read your post. Will try again and see if I can see it in a different light.
Think I have it now you are saying that it can be a trait that is further back than the parents, as you say the G.sire had a longer coat and I would guest the same is the case with the guests dog.

Hello Guest.
We need to know what you class as long hair, is it Lab length, GSD length or sheltie length?

About 1cm longer? My older bitch was mated twice, she herself has a very short tight coat. When crossed out to another line the bitch we kept from that mating had a coarser coat, not as tight or fine and looking at them together now probably very slightly longer length, also she seems to shed a lot more :( . Bred again and put to her Grandsire the pup we kept again had a very short tight coat same as her mums. The first dog we had Jake was bred from the outcross line and he too had the much coarser, longer coat but wouldnt have thought as much as 1cm difference, but a noticable difference?
