Ever since we had our dog spayed she has wondered and all to often fails to return when called. A recent trip to our local woods resulted with her roaming in the wooded area, us frantically (calm calling had stopped by now) calling her only to be saved by passing dogs that she went to see. She has also wondered from our neighbours garden only to be rescued by another neighbour before getting to the main road. Is this common once a dog has been spayed or could it be the breed (ckcs). We would love to be able to walk her off lead again but are too scared of losing her. We would welcome any suggestions as we're extremely worried.

I would think that spaying is merely a coincidence here. I have had spayed bitches who never failed to return when they were called. I have also never heard that wandering is a characteristic of CKCS. How old is she? It may be best to back to basics with her training.

yes you are right .... the ckcs is well know for doing it's own thing out on walks ...the trouble is they are so nosey and easily distracted I personally don't let mine off the lead as they wouldn't think twice about bolting over the road to chase a butterfly ...being spade makes no difference they are in my opinion a scatty breed and will go off when the mood takes them LOL..but i love them dearly and will always own them LOL

LOL Most people forget that the Cavalier is a Spaniel & most still have the hunting instincts, it is natural for them especially in interesting places like wood to seek out something to retrieve or flush

My boys are all obedince trained & in a place like a wood I would be clling them back to me for a treat & then releasing again again so they see coming back as an enjoyable thing to do

However I would never have any dog off lead anywhere near a road no matter how well trained they are

hi moonmaiden how ya doing ? totally agree with you ...mine do like being off the lead and sometimes come back for treat ...but sometimes not lOL  thats why it has to be a totally safe place and one of mine is so busy with her nose in the ground nothing will get her back until she decides she wants to I just walk away and when she see's I'm going out of reach she follows, perhaps our guest should make sure that her dog can't wander into other gardens after all it's not really fair on the neighbours:)

Thats why my garden is totally dog proof with asolid concrete slab wall & padlocked gates

There are too many dogs allowed to roam around here & if they were able to get into the garden I don't think they would survive very long as my GSD & BC's are very possessive over the grounds

My cavaliers are fine & off to the vets for their DNA sampling next Wednesday, thank goodness there will be two of us taking them ;)

I have now joined so can get loads of info in future.

When i said she gotr out from a neighbours garden I should have mentioned that we were visiting and my neighbour didn't know there was a gap in the fence.
Molly also doesn't always respond to treats but luckily the new one is so will be a lot stricker and try to train her better. Although very hard when they look so lovingly at you!!!
LOL
