Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Holding dog up after mating

I have been told by a few very experenced breeders, that after a mating you should hold the dogs back end up and it will help fertalize the eggs and you may have a bigger litter.

The first litter with my dog, the stud owner said not to bother it was just an old wives tail and my dog, a small breed at two pups.

The second litter with a different stud, she was held up at the back end for a few minutes after mating and she had five.

Maybe just a coinsidence or is there something in it.

Has anybody heard about this.

It's an old wives' tale. During mating the sperm is ejaculated before the prostatic fluid. The tie ensures that the fluid stays there long enough for the sperm to be conveyed past the cervix. Any fluid which leaks after the tie is broken is prostatic fluid and does not contain sperm.

Litter size is purely down to how many eggs were available at the right time to be fertilised.

Don't think it is necessary, after all we don't stand on our heads when we want to conceive, or do we?

Think of the Pamela Lee Anderson/Tommy Lee video and that Trapeze - I knew it had to have some sensible purpose apart from just fun! ;)

My bitches legs were held up after mating, she still only had one pup :(
Obviously an old wives tale.

Someone also told me I shouldn't let my bitch have a wee for several hours after mating too!  It's a good job us girls don't use that as a reliable method of contraception!

My girl wee'd as soon as the stud got off, she had 7 pups!........lol. that was just one mating too.
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 20.05.04 16:36 UTC
My girl did worse than that while still tied!

I once helped a friend in a mating of her Newfie bitch. there were four of us two for the dog 7 two for the bitch

Everything was fine (& the stud dogs owner went off to make us a cup of tea) until the dog turned & after being tied for 15 minutes he fell asleep & wanted to lie down only the bitch didn't, has anyone else tried to keep a very large  sleeping stud on his feet, put me off being involved with breeding Newfies for good.

I was once at a Rottie mating - Rita Parratt, no longer with us, and she made the dog and bitch lie down as soon as they had tied!!  Just as well as she was a senior citizen and they tied for 45 minutes!!
