Some years ago we owned a Golden Retriever dog (Kennel Club registered) which seemed to be smaller than some others of this breed we have seen.  He was lighter in colour (cream) and seemed to have a thinner coat.  We are now looking to buy another dog of this type but we do not want a large retriever, as he would be too strong for the children to walk.  What sort of breed should we look for or does anyone have any suggestions to help us?

Many thanks

How old are the children because IMO children under about 12 should not walk dogs alone anyway.

Hi,

Golden Retrievers should have a correct double coat not a thin coat or lack of it.
Also a smaller dog can also pull over children just as much as a larger dog that is where training comes in and depending how old the children are and how senseible as to whether they should be walking the dog.
If you have your old dogs pedigree you should have your breeders name or  breeders affix from this you may be able to contact this breeder again or contact The Golden Retriever Club.
Bitches are smaller than the dogs,

Dogs 56 - 61cms (22 - 24inches) at withers
Bitches 51 - 56cms (20 - 22 inches) at withers

Good luck in your search hope you find what your looking for.Don't forget a good temperament is essential.Ask to see hip and eye certificates of both sire and dam.
Breed average for hips is 19 so the lower the better.

Hi,

Sorry forgot to mention guest please bare in mind that Golden Retriever puppies are by nature as your probably aware bouncy friendly creatures who love everyone.BUT they grow intobouncystrong adults weighing almost 6 stone.
They MUST BE TAUGHT TO,

Walk quietly on a lead
Not jump up at everyone
Not jump all over you or your furniture
Come when called
Go to bed when told
Not to beg from the table.

There are many training classes held throughout the UK.
An obedient, well adjusted dog that is part of the family and welcome everywhere is a joy to own and admired by all.
