In which case Kellyann I can't be of much help it is 40 years since I was involved in obiedience. But then they were interested in how well your dog followed your instructions, you will have to follow the stewards instruction but that should not be too difficult and I don't think if you are a beginner the judge will be that bothered if you get it a bit wrong. I take it you have been going to some sort of training class and you can watch the contestents who go before you. Anyway who cares as long as you enjoy it you will soon learn the ropes. Jackie H

nowing oyur left and right is a good idea! - i always get it wrong and end up having to be re-directed back to the correct course - even if repeating the heelwork pattern off lead i manage to do it differently!

I always found it best not to watch the heelwork paten. If I did I was sure to anticipate somewhere. As such I liked to get in the ring as soon as possible. This is just about the opposite to most people but it worked for me! My old mentor was always having a go at me for turning the wrong way! I finally cracked it by saying to myself Left, Towards dog; Right, Away from dog!
Just spare a thought for the poor ring steward, whilst stewarding at the Flatcoated Retriever Open show a couple of years ago I suffered a mental block and sent one of the dogs the wrong way, straight into the ropes! So you see, we all get it wrong sometimes. Go and have fun!
Best wishes, John
