Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / should a male cock his leg
- By hippychick [gb] Date 18.05.04 13:47 UTC
should a male cock his leg, the reason i ask is my daughter has a border collie he is 14 months old and still pees like a bitch, someone at club mentioned to her that he proberly will need to be castrated as he should be cocking his leg at that age, why he has to be castrated he did not say, now it has got my daughter wondering if something is wrong with her boy, both his testicles are there and he is doing fine in obedience, flyball, agility,he has a brilliant nature and is so loving myself i don't see a problem but told her i would post on here and see what other people think.

I beleive I am right in saying that there are some dogs that dont cock their leg ever. It doesnt mean they should be castrated  Take no notice

Some male dogs never cock their leg and are perfectly normal!

Whoever suggested castration has absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

I know castration is "supposed" to "cure" a lot of things but this is the first time I have heard of it being suggested for this "problem" (and of course it is NOT a problem).

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. You daughter's dog sounds lovely and she should be thankful he's not weeing on every vertical surface, including her best shrubbery.

Leg cocking is a marking habit and if your dog does not feel the need he is probably a happy well adjusted boy enjoying his life and feeling no threat from other dogs and happy just to relieve himself in the easy way.

I have a 8 month puppy who will cock his leg outside ringcraft and in the field but never in the back yard where he empties like a horse. Think it may be that because I have other older intact males he either does not feel the need or thinks it better to keep his head (leg) down.

Glazby only cocks his leg ocassionally - he's generally too lazy and prefers to keep all 4 paws on the ground.  Ever so funny to watch him when he's really sleepy and attempts to cock his leg, he's almost fallen over a couple of times when he's lost his balance!! :-)

Even the OH doesn't always stand up to wee (probably far too much info!!) - so why should our dogs?!?!

Mine only cocks his leg when we are out but in the garden he just kind of stretches forward and keeps all paws on th ground.

Tundra is 9 months old and he doesnt cock his leg.  To be perfectly honest, I am quite pleased he doesn't!  My friend's pup does and likes to mark all of their brand new furniture!

I have just let her read the messages and she says she is not so bothered now, and she has to agree he is a well adjusted dog, he lives with 3 other dogs and they all get on like a house on fire, so she said she is just going to leave him entire as he is not a problem and we love him like he is.
so thanks to everyone for putting her mind at rest,
Carol

My border terrier always squats first thing in the morning - it's like he hasn't woken up enough to lift a leg !. After that I can always tell where he's cocked his leg - I've just got to look at one of my lovely heathers - one side is completely brown !!!.

Hey Megan - I didn't realise that there was someone else with a Dane on this board!! :) Please tell me that there is an end to all this puppy boisterousness?! Is it true that you start to see a bit of calming down after 1 yr? I'm at the 6 month stage and feel like I'm never going to make it to 1yr in one piece!!

Hi Carol

I too have BCs.  My older one is 15 months old and only started cocking his leg about 3 months ago.  The only reason he started was because we got another male BC pup.  I am fairly sure if we didnt have him as well he wouldnt have started it.  When he goes for a walk on his own he doesnt bother.  I am leaving him intact because he has not developed anything that would make me want to have him done and has the nicest and calmest nature I could wish for.  Personally I dont think his person knows what they are talking about.

The pup we are having done when he is older as he is exhibiting mounting, was cocking his leg at 9 weeks etc etc.

My young male is now 30 months old and still does not cock his leg.  He didn't leg cock before he was neutered (12 months old) and never has done since.

My lab does not lift his leg, he is 2 in june. i think it may be a good thing as my previous dog used to lift his leg all the time when out, territory marking, but blade just wees because he needs a wee and not because he wants to territory mark. He was neutered when he was12 months old.

I have a 4month old dogue de bordeaux and he cocks his leg and has done for several weeks!! He even tried to mount my  -in season- bitch !! Little s*d :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.05.04 18:48 UTC
Keep him away from your in-season bitch then! It's quite possible that he's old enough to mate and impregnate.
- By kerrieddbx [gb] Date 19.05.04 18:57 UTC
Too right! she's happily in isolation now :) You wouldn't believe it if you saw him he is such a sweet little thing, butter wouldn't melt..;)
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 19.05.04 20:07 UTC
My Ickle Man only cocks his occasionally, I suppose he doesn't feel the need to either as he's the only male with a load of cocky females :d
- By BrodytheBasset [gb] Date 21.05.04 19:14 UTC
My dog still doesn't cock his leg. He is nearly 15 months old now. I think I prefer it!!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.05.04 20:20 UTC
I wish my boys didn't cock their legs. They're far worse than bitches at ruining gardens!
