Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / showing my huskies

Hi i have three huskies, two bitches and a dog which are over a year old which are in training to work in harness. However, i would love to start showing my babies but i don't know where to begin. The breeder of my three has moved to spain so i can't contact her as i have no number.  How do i begin showing them as i would love to enter the southern open show in september with them. I printed out an entry form but its so confusing, i don't know what category to enter them as,  and do they need to be trained in ringcraft before i enter them. Im going to sound very stupid now, but in a show what do you have to do, seen it all on tv, walking dog around in a circle and all, but surely there must be more to it than that.  Hope i don't sound like a complete idiot :( but any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Natasha

Hi all, let me clear this up, Natasha has one of the litter mates of my husky, she tried using the login guest system but her post never appear, i let her use my log in name to put the post up. I work my huskies and will show mine at the open show along with natasha's dogs, i was always under the impression a dog should attend ringcraft, however natasha was told differently. Advice would be great. thanks.

The dog may not need training but the handler does, how else will they know what is expected of them.

If you are totally new to showing then I would say that Ringcraft is a must.  She should make it clear at the club that shw knows nothing about showing so that trainers will be able to tell ehr when she is moving at corredt speed for her dogs, when they are stood properly shoing off to advantage, adn most importantly the ogs will get used to and happily accept complete strangers feeling all over its bosy, checking for entirety and examining the mouth while remaining in a composed stance.

As for classes to enter I would advise to enter the lowest class that the dog is elligilble for, and maybe two mixed breed classes if at a general show.  This will give the exhibit a chance to gain ring experience, among it's own b4reed and with the distraction of other breeds.

At club shows there are usually lots of classes and it is usual to enter several.

As advised ..go to ringcraft and be honest...tell them you know nothing about showing.
Secondly...go along to some shows(champ shows would be best...working and pastoral day) and WATCH.You can then also talk to some of the other husky exhibitors...if you get someone who is willing to 'natter ' with you ask if they will explain what is happening while the showing is going on(not while they are in the ring obviously).Don't be afraid to ask questions...most people are flattered that your asking their opinion. ...its suprising how much you can learn from watching and listening.
