Could anyone give me any advice on breed tests please? What age should they be done? What needs to be tested etc? I have a boxer bitch. Thanx.

i know they should be heart tested but dont know at what age

Eye testing can be done at any age over about 12 weeks in the case of a Boxer. Hip scoring is done from about a year, aim later rather than earlier for that. The eye test is a once a year test whereas hips is a once in a life time test.

hello, heart testing should be done yearly(at any age) in boxers by a veterinary cardiologist which at a specialist vets cost around £30 if you can get to a boxer show you can have it done for £7 ! boxers are prone to aortic stenosis/pulmonary stenosis which is the narrowing of the heart vessels, and you shouldn't breed with a score over 2 average (0-2)
hip scoring is also worth having done this can be done from a year onwards and only has to be done once, costs around £80-100 depending on area and £25 (ish) to the bva for the score and hip scoring means a ga, boxers average score is 16 needs to be below this for breeding. don't know anything re eyes though ????
hope this helps

Actually you shouldnt breed from boxers that are over a 1 score.

I didn't know that, i was advised by a 'reputable breeder & vet' that it was 2 and under but mind you i don't think i would breed from a bitch who scored 1 or 2, just in case. Do you know whether progressive axonopathy is still a problem in boxers i looked in to it a while back and though it is genetic/hereditary can't seem to find a cleared list of dogs/bitches from anyone. i know it is not very common, has it been bred out completley ?? i suppose it was a problem a long time ago and now we are so many more lines on from affected dogs, i hate to think something like that would crop up again ???
