Topic Dog Boards / General / cages and more than one dog

Hi I was just wondering what the people on here do when they have more than one dog and use cages ie. do they all have separate cages but in the same room or do you have to put the cages in different rooms when for example a puppy is getting used to a cage.  The reason I am asking is I have a lab puppy who uses a cage but in a years time I am getting another dog which I also want to cage.  How do you go about it, it seems like a stupid question but it is something I need to think about.

I have 3 Staffs at the moment, and a 1 week old pup.
I have 2 cages, for my 2 youngest, they tend to share the bigger one when I'm around, and they decide to go for a snooze. On a night they both go in separete cages, but they are both together, infact on top of each other. My oldest, Ruby who has the pup at the moment doesn't sleep in a cage on a night. But she will climb in with the other 2 when the mood takes her.
If I decide to keep pup, then I'll be on the look out for another cage, unless of course Toesy, my 14 month male, proves he can be trusted to go without. :D wishful thinking :D

Hi so you have got one cage on top of the other and is the third cage in the same room?  so when I get my other pup just put her in her own cage but in the same room as my lab?  Julie

Jules,
I haven't got a third cage, only 2 at the moment.
Under normal circumstances, (before my bitch had the pup) all my 3 dogs slept in the kitchen
When I only had the 2 dogs, Ruby slept in her basket, and Toesy slept in his cage both in the kitchen close to each other.
When I got Rio at 10 weeks, she also slept in the kitchen in a cage, I cover her cage with a blanket, she settled better that way.
Now we have the pup, that we could be keeping, she'll also sleep in a cage when she's old enough to sleep without mum. That will also be in the kitchen.
So to answer your question all my dogs sleep separatly, but in the same room.
Hope that helps :)

We have two crates in use at the moment:  one in the porch, and one in the utility room.   The porch door is always open, as is the utility room door - as are the crate doors.    When all (7) dogs are loose - when we come home from work and the 4 who are on "kennel" duty rush in, and the 3 on "house duty" rush out, there is a mad 5 mins when 2 at a time try to rush into the crates - at the same time!!  The only place that is sacrosanct is Purdey's corner - and she tells off all who try and usurp her bed.

Seriously though, puppy Freya sleeps in a crate at night (she decides which one), the other one is used if we want to make sure that any of the others are eating their own food (and no one else's) - or the girls & boys can be kept apart when seasons come around.

I should say that when Freya joined us, her little crate was in the lounge beside Purdey's bed - because Purdey was always nearby, we didn't have any crying from the little one at all.
