Can anyone advise on scanning, shes a lab, seems too be showing alot of sighns early, this will be her 1st litter, and mine.

What is it you want advise about regarding scanning?
Best time to scan is 30 days post mating.
hope this helps.

30 days is best, they will be formed enough to check all is ok & at the best time to catch any resopbtion sites. good luck
her ribs are bloated, teats are pink and shes lost hair from around them, white discharge and more clingy than ever, when you want something so bad you start to see things that arnt there,if you know what i mean, but other are poeple are seeing it now but too put my mind at rest i thought i would get her scanned.

Good idea. The problem with dogs is they can show clinical & behavioural signs of pregnancy when having a phantom, so it's very difficult to know for sure.
A scan will diagnose pregnancy & tell you that all is well & give you an idea of how many pups to expect. :)
Hi Sandridge, seeing as you are not sure if your Lab is pregnant try the ring test before you take her for her Scan it would be interesting to see what it does! as i am in a simular position to you. Although the vet told me he couldn't see or feel anything but i'm not convinced... Thanks Steph
hi sandridge,im sure your bitch has taken as the clear discharge is an excellent sign they have, good luck
Well i did the ring test, and it swayed,so according to this shes having babies, will let you know the outcome on wednesday 19th our app is at 11:00,so we shall see.Julia
Thanks for that, and i was hoping she would have been done before my girl LOL as she is also being scanned next Wednesday at around 10am.. So we will see??? Steph
ive just been talking too someone how reacons xrays are better than scans, scans can be the cause of reabsorbing how can this be?she will be 35days when shes scanned.

I don't see how scans can cause puppies to resorb either! If they were that dangerous, why would they use them on pregnant women? I reckon this old wives' tale started up because now, using ultrasound, you can for the first time
prove that resorption takes place anyway.

I would never routinely x-ray a pregnant bitch to diagnose pregnancy.
Pregnant ladies can not be in the same room as an x-ray machine when an x-ray is being done, but can have scans done daily if nec.
Ultrasound works just on soundwaves & is safe in pregnancy.
How would a scan cause resorbtion?
By the time your girl is scanned at 35 days - she can not resorb a foetus that late. By this stage the bone formation will be starting on the little babes! :)

The only reason I would think a scan could cause reabsorbtion would be down to the stress involved but that is only an idea. As to pregnant women do they reasorb anyway?not wanting to cause an argument just thinking out load really. :) Gillian

No stress involved Gillian, very simple procedure - done whilst the dog is standing up. :)
edit to add - no women don't reabsorb as a dog would, but the point I was making was that if Ultrasound is used on pregnant ladies ~ surely there are no dangers involved. :)

I have a human doppler scanner. I was told by the manufacturer, who makes both types for maternity departments, that they use only 1/10th of the ultrasounds of picture scanners. He said that there is no scientific evidence as yet, but much conjecture, that using scanners routinely may not be such a good idea!! That's why I use a doppler on my bitches!!
So when Meg has her scan on wednesday at 35 days we should be able to see her babies IF she is carrying ?Im really excited but also scared i suppose, so there are a few of us with pups due round about the same time.Julia

HI Sandrige, my girl had really bad diahorrea and a green/ red discharge at 14 days and the vets told me she had lost her pups.
I took her back at days 23 coz she stopped eating for 2 weeks and they had a feel they could feel loadsa pups.
She had a scan the next day and the pregnancy ws confirmed there are at least 8 there. I didnt think they wuld be able to see them that early but they could
She had her last scan on day 39 and they are still there and you could even see heads.
She is now doing really well and is eating like a pig.
I wouldnt worry about the scan Im sure she and the babies will be fine.
Good luck
Amy
