I have just got back from taking the girls on a lovely walk and was on the homeward journey and walked upto the gate of a house where a Welsh springer lives. The dog came running to the gate and my girls did the same, tongues hanging and tails wagging. The old git who lives there came over to the dog with a saw in his hand and whacked it over the head :(
I know he is a cantancerous (sp) old an and was in a confrontational mood otherwise would have told him a few home truths. It still amazes me how some poeple treat their animals :(
Someone needs to whack him over the head, poor dog :(

So what are you going to do about it apart from posting on here?

& apart from the fact he had a SAW in his hand!

I am not sure ? What can I do ? Report him but to who ?

RSPCA, Dog Warden, police.............
I have reported people who I have seen abuse their dogs (and their children) and will continue to do so. People will only continue to get away with such behaviour as long as we do nothing about it...................

yes it goes on because people dont want too get involved, if he gets a visit even if its taken no further he may think twice next time.....

do you think he might take it out on the dog though?

One of the guiding principles in my life has been the following attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller. I cannot pass by any injustice/cruelty/abuse without comment/action. This may sound a little "pompous" but I feel extremely strongly that those who can speak out should........................
I cannot shrug my shoulders and say "what is the use, no one will do anything" may be they won't but at least you have given someone the opportunity....................
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me -
and by then there was no one left to speak out for me.

I agree but I will spend hours on the phone and get no where. It is his word against mine.
The police round here are as much use as a chocolate tea pot. I called them a couple of days ago about some children breaking into a building site as they were climbing on mounds of rubble which are highly unstable. They would have been buried alive if it had shifted. I am still waiting for them to come out !
I may try and ring the dog warden but I just think nobody will do anything.
I am not one of these people that will turn a blind eye, far from it but you have to look at the options and the most likely outcome which I think in this case will be wasting my breath !
I will let you know what they say. lets hope I am pleasantly surprised :)

you have the same police as we do then! useless! & our dog warden only wants to terroise old ladies that are trying to walk there 15yr old terriers, & spy on walkers using radios & binocolars!!!

Dog Warden 'No sorry that will be the RSPCA you need to speak to'

hmm
sounds like our dog warden....nuff said! cant believe the rspca would be interested-unless you tell them Rolf harriss will be involved!

I am waiting now for a call back fro the local RSPCA inspector. Lets see what they have to say. At least they haven't said sorry but you need to go to the police yet, but give it time :)

tell him the man had aSAW in his hand,& you are worried he could injure the dog!!!

In fact if the dog was at the gate and you were there on the other side and the man came up to the gate and hit the dog you could have well been in fear for your own safety...........................

I was too busy trying to calm the girls down as they were trying to get and say hello to the dog.I was having a battle of wills with Moose getting her to sit and stay and then walk to the heel in a calm and well behaved like dog manner! (she can do it when she trys :) )
The chap is a known grumpy old so and so. That is in some respects why I didn't confront him as know it would have got into a slanging match !
He will probably say it was my fault as the girls were winding his dog up !

No doubt "you made him do it"?
A common "excuse" made by wife beaters and other abusers in order to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions.
Confrontation is unnecessary and ill advised and no substitute for following correct procedures.
Was it Pastor Niemoller who said " For evil to succeed all that is necessary is for good men to do nothing" ? you need witnesses to corroborate this kind of incident which is usually the downfall of good people as either there are none or they are too cowardly to speak up.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" was by the philosopher Edmund Burke.
Witnesses are not always necessary, preferable yes, but this should not deter us from doing what is right and what we would hope others would do for us should the occasion arise.
If you live in Bedfordshire ring the police on Saturday when i'm at work and tell me all about it! Horrid man.
Thank you for sourcing the quote :). Of course we should act in accordance with our conscience, but I have found that most authorities are reluctant to act on an unwitnessed report which is why good people are frustrated when doing so. Very annoying when you know what you saw, but necessary to protect people from malicious allegations.

I anonymouslty reported the mad woman down the road to the RSPCA after seeing her throw a puppy which escaped from her garden over the hedge (she has four pups and the poor dam who was mated by accident) I had also seen her boyfriend drag a terrified puppy out from under a parked car where it was trying to hide. The same afternoon a police car and the RSPCA turned up and they asked her next door neighbours about her...she is already known to the police .I had to hide cos if she finds it was me she will damage my car or windows. The dogs were not taken away but the police come regularly.

Well had a call at 10pm last night and the inspector will be making a visit. One problem though he will be able to identify me as they are specifically going to name the time and day it happened and I doubt there was another mad lady with two young Labs girls excited to say hello to his dog walking past !
Oh well if he gets petty then I am sure I can rise above it :)
At least we are getting somewhere :)

I think the RSPCA and the SSPCA should have full police powers, somewhat like the animal welfare officers you see on Animal Planet :)
The sad fact is that people do get away with harming their animals because the police can't be around for animals 100% of the time and RSPCA/SSPCA officers only have limited authority. It's tragic and unfortunately there will always be people who take all their frustrations out on defenceless animals. I personally think that anyone selling puppies or rehoming their dog should be incredibly careful who they are selling that animal to. I know that people who harm their animals would have no problems at all lying to someone whom they were trying to obtain an animal from - but at the end of the day it should be everyone's responsibility to protect those who cannot protect themselves. To paraphrase Terry Pratchett - you have to speak out for those who do not have voices.

Lucy tell him you are a welfare officer with lab rescue that should shift him it works for me also tell him that you need to speak to someone higher up and failing that write a letter to the paper about the failings of the RSPCa Im fed up to the back teeth of them
sitting on millions of pounds then saying they cant afford to help people which is what they did in the week wehn someone found a babdly injured old spaniel told the finder they would pick her up after four phone calls said they coulnt afford to transport her !!
They are a farce.
