I'm just full of questions today aren't i? lol

OK. well i got Leo (4month old sheltie pup) his car harness today, tried it on him and he seemed to love it... so thought i would try it with him for a short journey in the car (5mins) and he was on his blankets strapped it. It was like a transformation, no shaking which is what he does on my lap and no looking like hes been abandonned, which is what he does in his cage...he just lay down and looked happy.
Tomorrow we are going for a 45min drive to Northampton as we often do and have decided to try the harness again, the only thing is he doesnt always last all of the way there being dry and i dont want him to soak his bed.... we are planning on getting one of those blankets that are waterproof on one side but dont have time to get one tomorrow, so i am looking for a solution that we may have around the house.....

Carrier bag maybe?
we dont really have any polythene

any other suggestions? Obviously we will cover it with a blanket so he cant hurt himself or anything, we just dont want the car soaked

You could always cut down the seam of 2 large black rubbish bags, open then up, tuck one down the back of the seat and the other one under the head-rest so it hangs down the back and then cover them both with a blanket.  mmmmm................did that make sense ?????

Take him for walk just before you get into car for journey then stop about half way to let him releive himself. If he can't last all the way there then its going to be better for him. I wouldn't expect a 4 month pup to last more than 20 mins in the car due to excitement etc.. Its no hardship to stop for 2 mins. My two sleep in the car on long journeys and they become restless when they need to go so we stop for 5 mins or so it also breaks up the journey for them new sniffs :D

The only place we can stop is the hard shoulder - he is usually dry on the way there its just incase something scares him, like having to brake suddenly, hes been going in the car since we first got him so hes pretty good, hes dry in the house and even some nights now, so all round hes good with his bladder control......and hopefully the harness will make him less nervous, he seems so relaxed with it that he wont have any accidents, knowing my Leo he will probably just go to sleep lol

I would be a bit worried about the use of plastic bags etc. in case he should try to chew them unless of course you are able to watch him all the way and prevent this from happening.
We looked around for ages to find a suitable boot cover for Spice,that wasn't horrendously expensive for both cars and found a very good 'picnic' blanket with waterproofed backing,on top of which we place a large piece of vet bed for car journeys,this way if she had an 'accident' the boot is protected and with the vet bed she is not likely to be uncomfortable.

We have been ever so lucky with her though,she has never had an 'accident' in the car even on long motorway journeys,on all other routes we try to stop every 1/2 hour or so to stretch all our legs and she gets a chance to have a wee :)

Why don't you get some disposable nappy pads or even nappies, tape them together and then tape them down on the seat and voila!
