My beautiful girlie gsd is now just over one. I have noticed now that more and more she is sleeping on her back, totally relaxed, back legs apart, and with one of her front legs crossed over her chest, totally undignified, but completely at ease, even if there's a noise, she'll just open an eye to check, just wondered how everyone elses dogs sleep? I love just looking at her like this.

A-w-w-w-w. I can just see Eli. Hee hee hee. And your GSD sounds so sweet and trusting too....all spread eagle. LOL.
They're all so cute when they sleep. Some of the positions are priceless. My Dobe pup has been known to look pretty undignified at times. And he amazes me how he is so flexible. He curls into a ball with his chin way around on top of his back. The little dogs are cute how they curl up together so snuggly and warm. My Lab breathes so audibly, that it can lull you right to sleep...very relaxed she is.
It's like when I had small children. We'd say, "Aren't they cute.......when they're sleeping." LOL.

my westie rosie is nearly 6 months , she has her own bed in my bedroom , but usualy during the nite i find her laid behind me with her chin resting on my head, but i cant be cross when i look and there are these 2 big black eyes watching me , she usualy gives me a kiss ( thats her way of creeping i think ) lol....
Glazby my boxer likes to sleep on his back too - legs spread eagle and with the ocassional leg jerk in his sleep. Infact my latest bruise was caused by his sleeping jerks as he managed to scratch me!!
He also likes to curl himself up in a little ball - he reminds me of a little foal or baby deer - all legs!!
If he can get into Satan Fillys bedroom Morse will do an Eli, but usually hes curled up with his tail under his chin for deep sleep, and laid out on his side with his long legs thrust over the edge of his basket when hes just resting. Im amazed at how much he does sleep in the daytime - the whole afternoon is his siesta time. In 24 hours hes out exercising for 3, night sleep for 8, patrolling the house and garden or playing for 3 so thats about 10 hours hes sleeping or relaxing with his chewies. He also watches far too much TV....

My Great Dane puppy, Honey, starts off curled up in a very small ball - it's amazing how such a big dog can curl up into such a small shape - but as she gets into deeper sleep, she starts stretching out, with her front legs sticking out at 90 degrees but her back legs straight under her body...almost like a yoga stretch! She usually sleeps on a beanbag just beside the sofa and as she stretches out, her head will fall off the edge of the beanbag and hang over the side and her eyes will roll backwards - all in all, not a very pretty sight! She also snores incredibly! LIke a hugely fat old man! :) And she dreams quite a lot and makes muffled barks and running motions with her legs. It's very funny to watch. But she never sleeps on her back though - maybe there's just too much bulk to move and she isn't that agile! :)
Hsin-Yi
Millie the Scottie usually sleeps curled up in a ball, but quite often stretches out, flat on her stomach, with her legs out flat behind her....crossed! She's such a lady! :-D

I know what you mean about snoring Hsinyi, Missie snores - my god can that dog snore!! I have to turn the volume up on the tv and even then I have to tell her to be quiet. If someone phones me at night they ask what that noise is in the background and they dont believe me when I tell them!.

Our little Stafford boy, Bam, sleeps either flat on his back on the bed with his legs in the air, splayed out like a frog on the carpet (any other Staffy owners will know this pose well!), or with his head draped across my neck while I'm sleeping in bed. No so comfy on those hot summer nights, but I'm sure he'll come in handy in the winter. ;)

tara sleepson her side, streched out in her own space, nellie sleepsnext to me,on her side legs in my back. flynn slleeps on his back or preesses his back legs up agaisnt something. sometimes when i wake up in the night flynn is standing by the side of my bed staring hard at my face....scary!!!

My youngest son (Jamie) came running in the front room a few nights back shouting 'mum! mum! The dogs' upside down! Confused I went to have a look, and there was Maddie lying on her back with her mouth open, tongue hanging out and all four legs in the air! :D Bless
yes to as well to the lying on the back spread eagled. The pup also curls up into a little ball and looks just like a fox cub as he also has a very narrow nose. His favourite trick at night is to sleep under my side of the bed his legs just pointing out from under the bed - that way if I get up during the night he is the first to know.
Also, dont know if anyone else finds this, but around 6am both dogs are up sat by my side of the bed looking at me. As soon as the alarm goes off at 6.20am I get licked from both of them or a cold wet nose under the duvet. Presume its their way of telling me its time to get up and take them out for a run.

Your dogs all sound so cute and some of what they do mine do, or use to do. I get a real mental picture of your little dumplings. That standing by the bed, just staring at you to wake you up...hee hee. My Lab use to do that. Now she outsleeps me in the morning.

Rosie my 10 year old westie lies on my pillow its a bit like sleeping with a hat on So beware Rosiepoppin it gets a bit warm in the summer Amy our rough collie puppy thinks she should sleep on the bed too but she just stays a wee while then goes down to her bed downstairs

Katie404 - know what u mean about staffies, Spike strikes the exact pose, and proceeds to 'kick out' and stretch frequently and if that's not enough he snores incredibly loudly! How many people in your house? Our staffie visits each bed in turn, so when one gets up he goes to the next person who is still in bed!:D so weekends he won't always get up until 11.30am!!!!!;)

Due to the fact that I lost 'the dog should be allowed on the bed' debate with my OH when Lana was a puppy - my dog sleeps over me

Which was quite cute when she was 15 weeks old - Now she is a 9 month old hairy 24kg beast its starting to affect my nights sleep  I wake up in the morning to find her staring right in my face which is a bit scary some mornings, more so when you have dreamt about brad pitt licking your face :D :D

LOL!!! Cute innit, a few of my girlie labs do that. mine do it cause they know we find it cute so will lay like that for ages just so we'll say in a silly voice " silly girl, what you doing"

My GSD girl sleeps 'up the wall' on her back, legs in the air. My other GSD did too - we call it the crash position! Always makes me smile to see them like this.

my labs poppy and daisy sleep curled up on the sofa, and buddy my baby staffy, sleeps in his cage(with the door open!!) stretched full out like a frog, candy (baby staffy) whos just given up her cage to buddy sleeps on our bed at the moment and climbs on hubbys back so it looks like she's having a piggyback! This will have to be sorted soon though cos she protests when i get up to go to the loo, and thinks its brekky time.During the day though candy and buddy have naps on the sofa cuddled up next to each other, they're soo cute!!:)

Angus the Westie sleeps on his back nearly all the time with his back legs open displaying his crown jewels (he's complete) and my missus calls him a "right little tart!". His other habit is to jump on the bed, whilst I'm in it, and do a back flip so he's laying on top of me. He's a real character.
Cheers
John

Anton when I wake up is sat there looking at me, well I think he's looking at me as you can't see his eyes, just this big woolly blob staring down at me :d He's so cute, until he wacks me one with his paw that is!!

I love hearing about all your dog's contorted postitions. LOL. Very cute. Love the one whack of the paw. Funny. Bonnie, my Lab use to wake me up sometimes and just stood there staring and wagging until I sensed her presence. She doesn't do that anymore. She sleeps longer than I.
My dogs sleep like teenagers. I have to wake them up in the morning lest I get too bored. The two Chi's sleep in a crate together all curled up so it looks like one dog. The Lab sleeps on a couch, but I just got her a new bed because it was getting too hard to jump on the couch for the old girl. The Dobe sleeps in a crate next to my bed. He's as good as gold...never makes a peep until I get up regardless whether it's 6:00 or 8:00.
When we're hanging out lying on the couch watching TV, I have one Chi curled up by my chest, one on my side or on the back of the couch and an 80 Lb Dobe at the foot of the couch. He always has to have a couple of paws and his chin on my hip, no matter how much of a stretch it is...has to have some part of his body touching mine. There's simply no more room for any more dogs so the Lab is happy on her very own bed. They get into all kinds of positions, the Dobe being suprisingly agile...can curl up very small with his head turned all the way around over his back...like a parakeet. LOL.

Hi all
What a great thread - I love reading about how all your dogs sleep. Tag our male Dobe sleeps on the sofa in the conservatory in the day/evening and then when we go to bed he likes to "upgrade" himselft to the main sofa in the lounge (which he whines at us to hurry up and get off when its getting late- LOL!!!). Then he happily takes up nearly the whole three seater soft all night.
He also snores away in a very baby-endearing way - almost a gentle snorting sound! He loves sleeping on his back - legs aspread - like most of the dogs I see. Reading Carrie's post he too is very agile dobe and can curle up into the smallest ball, almost bending in half completely! He is a dreamer though and no sooner than his eyes are shut he is off into a dream and he makes all sorts of jerks and eye movements and sometimes wakes himself up.
Tag also likes to sleep with his head upwards on the sofa and so puts his head on the arm with his nose pointing upwards and looks so funny! In the car on the back seat while in his harness he loves to hang his head down over the seat while asleep - he is brilliant travelling he just settles down straight away and sleeps.
The best sleepy thing he does though is he sucks his teddy or a blanket between his front paws and then falls asleep like that - his head keeps dropping and waking him up - BLESS!!!! SO cute! (although the older he gets he is fast loosing all his teddies due to his newly found hobby of shredding with his new front big teeth!!!) :D :D

Mandy,
I can relate to what you say about the dog's head way up on the back of the couch. Lyric does that too...stretches it and points his nose up, wa-a-a-ay up on the back rest, all twisted from his body. No wonder they get cervical problems sometimes. G-a-w-d!!
Funny dudes.
Carrie
Have any of your noticed that they wake up with a squashy face on the side that they have slept? :0)

Buddy (westie) sleeps in various positions. At the moment he is curled up on the back of the sofa (this is his favourite spot for looking out of the window). My personal favourite is when he holds one of his front paws in his mouth when he sleeps. So cute i melt just watching him. When he feels like it he'll get on the bed with me and usually sleeps on his back with all legs akimbo. Also when he wakes from a long sleep i love to see him with all squished up face hair and sleepy eyed. He's adorable.
