I have to go a business trip to Scotland later and this morning my dog was acting very strangely - following me around the house. When I went upstairs he sat at the bottom of the stairs and cried dreadfully (he's not allowed up there). He had not seen me packing a case and I had followed my normal morning routine but it seemed like he knew I was going away for a couple of days. Strange or what?

It is amazing how they read your routine and body language. Can't fool them!!

oh yes, my dog know when im going to go outside, when im going to go to work.....he is very in tune with what i am doing and he knows if the routine is changed a bit.
my neighbors have a puppy that kept unpacking their suitcases while they were getting ready for a trip. the pup would pull all the stuff out carry it around the house and then go sleep in the suitcase!!!

I was unpacking our suitcase after a weekend away, and Missy climbed in the suitcase!!! We do usually change our habits/routine quite considerably, and it doesn't take them long to 'twig' ;)

elija do you wear different shoes to go different places? :-) Dogs are so observent and notice your ever move..for example..my dog watches my feet a lot and knows =
slippers mean nothing happening, can have forty winks,
dirty shoes from the garage mean yippee!! down the fields so wait by back door,
posh shoes mean going in the car so wait by front door,
slippers at night mean nothing doing, and if it's after 10 and the last crumb of biscuit has been and gone it's out through my little door for a 'p' then up to the soft bed in the corner of the bedroom and the humans can please themselves!!:-D
Reddoor SNAP :D :D . That sounds so much like Jazz lol . He does a nut if i get a scrunched up carrier bag out of his drawer too though, he knows its walkies then lol.

Reddor,
I can definitely attest to that! LOL. Yes, when I put on my walking/atheletic type shoes that I wear on our walks, it's yippee....Mom's getting ready to go on our hike! And they all bounce around and make it extremely difficult for me to put them on.
When I'm going out on Friday night for karaoke or something, it's not only shoes, but perfume. I'm in the bathroom putting make up on, perfume etc and they get a worried look like, "Oh sh*#....she's leaving us for several hours, the bi#*h." LOL.
Slippers....all is relaxed around here. LOL.
They do watch the feet don't they.....cute.

yes yes and yes, they can definitely tell. Mucky boots means walkies and the older one just sits there and winges until I get their leads. Casual suede boots means the cars and shopping so we may get to go so we will winge by the door just in case she feels sorry for us and takes us that way we get to go down by the river on the way back, posh shoes means going out and we aren't going and yes they do sulk.
I've tried wearing my trainers at random times during the day to stop the panic that occurs when I put them on - but she still knows EXACTLY when I am putting them for no reason (ignores), when i am putting them on to take her out (joy!) and when I am putting them on to leave her (nooooooo, don't leave me alone, mummy!)
