My 19 month old Weimaraner is going through training at the moment with Bark Busters as she has really bad seperation anxiety and is very insecure.  Whenever she is left alone in the house she barks constantly.  It has been recommended that we socialise her more with other dogs and if possible find her a 'friend' who is older and does not suffer with seperation anxiety, to get to know well so that when we trust them together they can be left alone for varying periods.  The theory is that the other dog will tell my dog to shut up when she starts barking! I do not know anybody with a dog and so this is an appeal for anybody in the Quinton area of Birmingham (UK) who would like to help.

Unfortunately, what is just as likely is that your weimeraner will set the other dog off, and you'll have 2 dogs barking instead of one ...

That happened when my sister got a mature Lab bitch to help her ESS with her seperation anxiety.  Instead of one dog barking, she had the distinctly more melodious Lab joining in!

This probably sounds really stupid, but have you tried treat balls or leaving the radio on?  In the end my sister had to seperate the two dogs when she was away and give them both treat balls!

I would strongly suggest that you approach a member of the APDT http://www.apdt.co.uk/or the APBC http://www.apbc.org.uk/ (you need referral via the vet for the latter) instead of using Barkbusters http://www.barkbusters.co.uk/.

Barkbusters is a franchise operation whose members do not necessarily have to have had any experience with dogs let alone professional training or accreditation.

The advice you have been given is, to be quite frank and polite, totally erroneous; what you will end up with is TWO barking dogs.

Please seek advice from reputable, registered trainers or behaviourists.

I've also heard some very dubious stories about this organisation.  It seems that almost anyone can become a 'therapist'.

I have a dog with separation anxiety - he can howl for hours none stop.  I cured that when he was left alone, before I got another dog.  Two dogs are company for each other, but one barking/howling will simply set them both off.  Dogs tend to pick up each others bad habits, not the good ones, unfortunately.

That is absolutely the daftest idea I have ever heard of and the worst reason for getting a second dog.  Like the others have said you will end up with two barking dogs.  I have one rescue dog that suffers with separation anxiety.  You should hear the racket when he sets them all off.   Fortunately I'm never far away.

If you believe it's your dog whose being trained by Barkbusters, then there is something wrong - Bark busters can't be in your house most of the day - and this is what is required to train a dog - it's YOU who should be doing the training.  I've heard some bad stories about that organisation, but that advice really takes the biscuit :(
