I found this in our dog club newsletter, and I had no idea that oil seed r*pe was so dangerous. "...The bright yellow oil seed r*pe field looks very pretty, but it is very dangerous for your dog. Many dogs have died in a field of oil seed r*pe. They get lost very easily and if you do manage to find your dog it could be badly burned, with eyes so swollen that it cannot see for some time."

The only problem we have had with the oil seed r*pe fields is that our dogs emerge bright yellow from the pollen!!
Every three or four years the field nearest to us is sown with r*pe and the only problem we have encountered is the smell of rotting cabbage when they harvest it!

A couple of years ago my terrier disappeared after a rabbit into a r*pe field. He was never the best at coming back when on a mission but I was concerned when he still hadn't come back after 10 mins. I kept calling and whistling and I could hear him scabbling about but didn't know if he was ignoring me or was lost. He finally reappeared after 20 mins absolutely exhausted and gasping for breath. His eyes and nose were rubbed raw and he had to rest for several minutes before we could walk home. I made sure he couldn't do that again.

Well - thanks for the warning - we've obviously been very lucky in the past. This year we don't have r*pe, but I'll bear this point in mind fort next year - after all it would be first year for Loki Beau & Freya if it is R*pe next year!

Why the asterics in R*pe. Oil seed R*pe is a plant.
isnt that going 'politically correctness online' too far???????
Woiuld you say to your old granny
"look at the lovely colour of the oil seed um um um", I dont think so???????????????????
Sorry, that was just a very annoying thread to read because of the asterics where they were not needed.

We have, what we refer to here as the p*rn rule. Certain words and phrases are picked up by
search engines when they trawl websites collating data. The data trawled is then used when people type a set word into a search engine. When people run a search on a set word or phrase, they are offered hundreds of sites with a connection to that word or phrase. We prefer that our forum is not associated with words that appear in that context. It encourages hits on our site by people who have nothing to do with dogs or dog based subjects. We are not stopping you using the word. We are asking you to replace a letter with a
* to make it harder for the SE to pick it up.

Oh dear, as I'm typing this out of my window I can see 4 large r*pe field and one of them is directly on our daily walk. Here in Switzerland, r*pe is a very common crop, and you can't really avoid it. It does look very pretty, but the pollen flies everywhere and most days our car look yellow, as does everyone elses.
I will pass on the word to the other owners I know. Thanks for the warning, Penny is almost never off the lead(we have a large yard and barn, and we walk her on the flexie), but Lucy does go off the leash, and after we get Tamino's second vaccinations done, he will go for short walks with us.

"many dogs have died" ...
where are the statistics on which this statement has been based?
There are dogs that are allergic to rape in its flowering form (can't stand the smell myself) but it begs the question "why were the dogs allowed to run around on a farmer's livelihood?" (unless of course they had permission).

Mine aren't "allowed to run around on a farmer's livelihood" - but have run in in pursuit of rabbits. Let me tell you, the farmer is only too glad if one of our dogs has caught a rabbit or two - to see the amount that these little furry creatures can take from a famrer's livelihood is a realy eye-iopener. If a field is not rabbit-fenced then rabbits will destroy almost a quarter of a crop.
The farmer near us loves us to walk our dogs on his land, we have whippets that are good rabbiters and the land is infested with them so we are doing him a favour and letting our dogs have great fun at the same time. Didn't know about the r*pe being dangerous though, thanks for the warning.
