My mother and son duo are lovely - Luke is 7 months on Thursday. He was very good at walking nicely before, but has become prone to pull. He hates a halti, so I'm going to go back to basics with him re this. That I can cope with. However, we do seem to have a difficulty with taking them both out together - we've followed advice to take them out separately thus far, but obviously sometimes we want an "all together" outing - I mean OH, me, Maggie and Luke. They're brilliant together in the car, but when we arrive wherever, Luke is so excited he becomes absolutly uncontrollable!
I presume the best way to handle this is for us both to take them out together locally, where they're used to, for 10 minutes every evening? Has anyone any other ideas? Thanks.
Cathy.

Hi Cathy, well I have several dogs and some of them are very responsive to me and anything I ask them to do regardless of how many I take out together and two of them are very hard work if they are with the other dogs. I think it very much depends on whether your dog looks more towards people (you) or dogs (his mum). With my two, they get lots of individual walks and we play and train and then anything that I get from them in the way of attention when they are with the other dogs is rewarded. Clicker is excellent for this. Your Luke is still very young and if things are going in the right direction when he is on his own then its just a case of lowering your expectations when he is with his Mum and build up from there.
I have a mum and 2 sons (Staffs) and it's the mum that can get overexcited now so I use a halti with her, yes, she hates it, but it is a case of perserverence (sp?) with that - she is associating going walkies with halti ie good things, so is objecting less and less but boy can Staffies object to stuff when they want to! :-) The boys are angels to walk but I did spend a lot of time walking them all separately and together so they all just get used to all situations.
Re.the walking out together, I really only can suggest just lots of little walks all together to help Luke (think it was Luke?) gets used to the situation but would maybe suggest continuing either with Halti or one of the other walking aids ie Gentle Leader etc (Don't think Gentle Leader is same as Halti - might be wrong on this!)
Hope you get some other suggestions too...
Ahem, sally, did you say SEVERAL dogs... isn't that a little bit of an
understatement?! ;-)
