I HAVE A DOGUE DE BORDEAUX AGE 10 MTH, HOW MANY CHICKEN WINGS CAN I GIVE HIM AND HOW OFTEN?
- By archer [gb] Date 09.05.04 15:47 UTC
If your giving them as a treat I would give 1 or 2. One of my boys used to not chew his properly to start off with and would then regurgitate them and eat them again...don't worry if yours does. My boys now learnt to chew them first

Hi Guest

It depends whether it is a treat or a meal - if a meal there is a lot more to feeding a raw diet than chicken wings and I strongly suggest you do some research on some of the BARF (bones and raw food/biologically appropriate raw food) sites and email lists first.

There also various books available such as
Give Your Dog A Bone, Grow Your Pups With Bones and The BARF Diet by Ian Billinghurst
Books by Tom Lonsdale and Kymathmy Smultz (not correct spelling for last one.)

Just for comaparison,my 7 kilo shih-tzu gets 5 wing TIPS for breakfast a few times a week, unfortunately she cant handle a whole wing :( I would say 2 or 3 would be enough for your dog,you can give them everyday if you want.

Hi Christine

How old is your girl?  My pups have been eating them for a few weeks now - I think the smallest one was around 4 kilos when she first ate her whole one and that is with puppy needles, occasionally known as teeth!

Christine,Emma is 4 years old,i have tried giving her whole wings a few times but she just loses interest in them and i end up binning them.It doesnt make sense that puppies can handle them but she cant  With the tips she crunches a couple times and theyr'e gone.My other dog used to love them(tips) but she choked on one once(didnt chew properly, swallowed it whole) and since then has refused to touch another one, very infuriating as she used to really enjoy them,i will try giving Emma a whole wing tomorrow and she see how she goes.

Hi Christine - perhaps she is dainty so thinks she should only eat dainty things :)  Maybe it hurts her to really chew - what were the breed originally bred for - maybe that has a bearing ?
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 10.05.04 13:57 UTC
Shih-tzu's were bred to be purely lap dogs, nothing more ;) They were originally bred by the Dowager princess of China or rather the palace eunichs bred them, commoners were not permitted to own a tzu
Come to think of it,Emma is a very dainty and feminine girl, another possibility could be that it takes her too long to get through a whole wing and she loses patience with it??But then again she can polish off a pork rib in 10min. which is quick for such a little mouth.I havnt tried her with a whole wing in ages,i will wait until she is really hungry and offer her one then,i will let you know the outcome.I'd say a dobe pup would be bigger then Emma is?? Tzu's are heavy boned dogs which accounts for their weight,my 16mth. pup already weigh 8 1/2 kilo, but she isnt a big looking dog, just very, very solid!

Shih Tzus were developed in Tibet before they went to China in the mid 19th century.

all my terriers are feed on the barf diet.they have 2 x meals per day.made up of 2 x 2 joint wings and a tablespoon of veg/fruit mash.you will need to get hold of the book to understand the diet.they also have fish, rabbit and venison.
