Topic Dog Boards / General / "Blue" shampoos do they work?
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 09.05.04 15:49 UTC
Friend of mine mentioned these the other day and although my dogs are black & white, I have thought about one of these "blue" shampoos that are supposed to enhance white coat.  Do they work?  My new place of employment sells them - mainly for horses - and also a stain removing shampoo, so I can obtain them easily enough but I'd like some feedback before I buy!

Thanks

Christine

I would say basically No they do not work. I have tried most of them , all the gels etc all the lightening shampoos etc don't think they make much difference really and they tend to dry the coat a bit I think..

We use the professional choice shampoos - one for black tris, and one for blue merles - and must admit that when we DONT use the blue merles shampoo on the white bits, they don't look so bright!

I've never found them to dry the coats out, either.

Glad it works for your guys , maybe different breeds, different coat textures..Not sure. Most of the ones I have are by system is is it first system. Too lazy to get up and looka t the bottles. Whitel lightening is one and the whitener gel is another one I have lying arounds, and crisp and white I think maybe.

I use Hilton Herbs blue shampoo on the white bits of my dogs and I have to say it works for me.  Lovely dazzling white and I dont find it dries out the coat .  It is also a low lather shampoo so is easily rinsed out.

I nearly always use them on my white & pie sibes.  It does make a difference ;-)

Wouldn't bother on the white bits of my grey & whites though, and I'd probably only use on a very white Munster (if you see what I mean)

I haven't noticed it drying their coats and in the show season the whites and pies are washed very regularly :-(

A quick tip, do go for the 'deepest' colour you can find on the blues

I use them on my cavaliers & find they also remove the er yellowing that the boys always seem to have ;)

Their coats are never dry & always the required silky coat as per the breed standard

I use the Plush Puppy one on my Border Collie, it is more violet then blue, but is for whitening.  I find it brilliant, the white bits come up snowy white, no yellowing to be seen.  It gives a lovely shine to the black too.

I agree with Sarah, the best results would be on a black and white Munster, rather than a mottled one.  If anyone has white bits on their dogs, try the pixie dust, :) you won't be disappointed.

We use the Wahl one on the partis, it is more purple than blue, but definetly makes a difference, and certainly does not dry the coat, but then we always condition afterwards, anyway.

Hi Sarah,

It's mainly for Mia's "whiter" hindquarters I have been thinking about but then I have seen a "stain removing" shampoo and wonder if that might be more suitable?  She has nibbled a slight pinky patch on her chest and I want to clean it up although I realise she'll never hold a profuse coat there, so it could be her skin colour too?  Stain removing shampoo might be better for Curtis's "nether regions" fringing too.

Who stocks the Plush Puppy range in the UK?

I use blue shampoo (all systems) for my Papillons, did try other shampoos (non blue) for white coats but didn't like the results I got.
Use Doreen Paige's Banish to keep staining on boys undersides under control and as white as possible.

Christine

Have a look on www.plushpuppy.co.uk, they have just set up a uk website, haven't looked at it yet, picked up their card at Birmingham today.  They are great products and Jackie is very helpful.

I own Siberian huskies and cherish these shampoos. My Sibes are red & while and black & white. I only use the blue shampoo on their chests, legs, underbellies, and fluffy white hindquarters. Boy, this stuff works wonders with Houdini is trying to be all black rather than black and white. It makes them shine. My friend owns an all white Siberian and uses blue shampoo, too. Sometimes on a sunny day I go to his house and see Jake, my eyes are blinded because Jake always looks sooo white and with the sun, looks soooo bright. I would be lost without this shampoo for my dogs. :)

Hi Lily Munster

I use Four Paws 'Magic Coat' for white coated dogs on my pale silver wolfhound/beardie x and it brings his coat up beautifully.  It shines and brightens though maybe doesn't lighten his coat.  I've not found any adverse (drying out) effect.

Hi,

I use the Groomers shampoos- Royal Jelly for all over baths, great for coat condition.  Also use their Royal Jelly food supplement for new coat growth, and my older bitch who never normally has a good coat is swimming in it this year.

Use the Blue Pearl for 'white bits' baths before shows, and I think it's great, would definitely say it's more effective.  Brings 'em up luvverly :D
