ive been invaded by snails-in my yard, which is concrete, but i have a row of 3 wood kennels the 2 brick built ones out there, we had them over winter and i thought we'd got rid of them-but the silver tracks back---i'll be putting beer out for them but do's anyone know anything about them, like life span how young appear etc-
- By mari [ie] Date 03.04.02 22:45 UTC
Dizzy salt melts them . drink the beer :d
- By dizzy [gb] Date 03.04.02 22:48 UTC
with them running-well slimeimg between the kennels i dont want to put salt out incase it gets into the dogs eyes, so i'll go for the drink, i empty his when he falls asleep in the chair- swear blind he drank it all when he wakes up.

Rock salt round the routes they enter should stop them & doesn't dissolve as quick

Chickens & ducks love to eat snails you could always get one of them as a pet:cool:
- By Leigh [us] Date 04.04.02 10:29 UTC
Wrong! Road Salt burns the dogs pads  Try a line of sharp sand or small gravel all around the boundry. It works for me :-)
- By Lara Date 04.04.02 06:06 UTC
I saw something about gardening that said if you put a strand of copper wire around the base of pots etc... slugs and snails will not crawl over it to climb up and get the plants.
I think I'll give it a try this year.
- By patricia [gb] Date 04.04.02 09:58 UTC
Hate snails :( but they love my garden so over the wall late at night they go
I know! but then I do not kill them Zac had one in his mouth :EEK:at the week-end.

Tried beer but dog likes that as well:) next venture egg shells around my prized pot
plants, They thank god do not touch my big palms and tropic plants:)
- By dizzy [gb] Date 04.04.02 19:37 UTC
put salt down outside the back door, put beer in a trap in one of kennel runs----nothing!!!!ive no plants or anything in the yard, dont know what theyre living on, -who and where did someone say something about porridge oats--what happens with those- or where you just feeling sorry for them :)
- By LeahLoo [gb] Date 04.04.02 19:44 UTC
Did you see "how to be a gardener" a few weeks ago about slugs. Alan - aka 'God' :) tried all of the 'remedies' and they filmed the cheeky snalis and slugs just sliming right over - in the case of the beer, they drank it and still ate the plants!!! Not much help from Mr Titchmarsh!!! However, last year, I had a slug that came under my back door every night and i put a line of normal table salt across the back door and it never came back. Try and put the salt into the nooks and crannies- where the slugs/snails can get but the dogs can't.

funny you should say that but most of the slime seems to start at my back door, theres a niche under the step so dont know if theyre under there, or living under the row of kennels--anyhow if theyre under the step theyre looking sick--hubbie was working outdoors and had a bit cement left-he asked if there was anywhere needed the bit he had spare--you dont have to guess where it went- so thats that one gone---waiting to see if anything pops out tonight-its not that theyre eating plants or anything, there isnt any,-im more worried about the dogs eating them !!!!and the risk of lung worm,
- By gina [us] Date 04.04.02 21:08 UTC
I squirt my plant pots and around the patio (and I suppose you could squirt places where the dogs cant reach) with salt water in a spray bottle. It lasts longer and not so much salt around for the dogs to lick up. This might help.

PS I think I am becoming a bit of a pro (or a big head or one of those know alls who know nothing LOL) but my next door neighbour wants a Shar Pei and I lectured him earlier this evening when we were all sitting in our garden (him being the dog owner for a long time and me just starting) about looking into the breed properly and getting a proper breeder like you etc etc - just as well he was having a few drinks with us at the time or I would have probably bored him rigid if he was completely sober (I probably would have kept quiet if I hadnt had a few glasses of wine)!!!! gina--warn your neighbour to be very carefull-ive had a lad writing to me over the last few days that paid £1.000 for his sharpei-when i got the pedigree ,breeder etc, they where unknown breeders, however the sire and the dams breeders i know -but this new breeder is charging way over the odds-more so than the established breeders that bred his foundations-this poor lads been taken to the cleaners big time,

He came in and read your post. He says he has seen a breeder on the internet in W. Sussex not sure what site he was on though. They are about to buy a new house so I know he wont be thinking of buying a pup yet until they are settled in their new home. Many thanks Gina

Dizzy,

This thread has reminded me of happy times I had as a student. We had a nightly visit of snails in our living room, which had a (charming) dark brown cord carpet which showed the trails up a treat! We had heard about the salt thing so one night laid a ring of table salt around the corner where they came from - the trails in the morning showed where they all (or one very busy snail) gone back and forward from the corner to the salt all night! Not one trail showing they had crossed the line. I was all for leaving them an assault corse the following night but unfortunaltly my flatmates were more hygenic than me and refused to let me!

Hope the cement worked for you, if not try a ring of table salt round the door!

last night nothing left a streak-im hoping theyre locked away under concrete!time will tell- through the week theyd even been down to the brick kennels in with the spaniels-suprised they got back out!!
