Topic Dog Boards / General / 1 dog or more?

Obviously we arent looking for another dog right now, Leo is only 16 weeks but i was wondering what peoples views on how many dogs you should have.
We used to have one dog and when my nan died we got her dog and they got on so well and were such good company for each other and it was nice to have 2 dogs around.
Do you think its better to have one dog or two + as company for each other and play mates......if we do get another it wont be until Leo is at least 18months when he is more mature and trained etc

13 pups too, oh my God!!  Hope Carina's not going to have that many but she's very big with only a week to go.  Ooh, I'm getting nervous and no I'm not keeping any of mine either, although I'd love to as it's a different line I've used this time.  NO, NO, NO, I'm not keeping one, I'll keep telling myself that :d

Are you trying to keep up with me Lel :D :D :D
By the way I've got 3 Staffords, and a 2 day old pup, which we very likely could be keeping. :)

Michelle.

Hi Michelle
glad to hear you may be keeping the baby :)
Third dog which will be a rescue may not be a Staffy up to now . Not that I wouldnt consider one of course - just depends which particular dog needs a home the most when we are in the postion to rehome :)

I have three at the moment, but now that I think about it, another three wouldn't go amiss.  :D   Another Vallhund, another Gordon, and a Rottie or English Springer, that sounds about right to me.  :D

Well I have 3 at home at the moment, due a new one in August, my mum has one of my others and when I mate her my mum's thinking of having one of her pups!!  Yes we must be mad :d

We have 5 and sometimes I find it very busy. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't change it. But in the future I only want 1 maybe 2 much more easier to go places with that many then it is with 5. I have one big one 158 pounds and the other 4 are boston terriers. I find 1 bonds more with their human family where 2 or more do alot of bonding with each other.

It all depends on you and if you have the time for more as well as able to afford more. Good luck :)

We have 3, two of them are about the same age (5 and 6) and the pup is nearly 7 months.  Was planning at stopping there until anything happens to the older two, but have just had the pup diagnosed with elbow dysplasia, so will not be able to do agility so would consider another Cattle Dog, although other half is adamant that we won't get another one (well, we are planning another baby first!)

Hi,

It is correct in thinking that 2 dogs can be better than one (don't know if hubby will agree with me on that!).  They do tend to keep each other company.  I bought my 2nd last October.  At first it was hard work.....I had forgotten how tedious the housetraining was!  Also, my 2nd pup was completely different to my 1st.  With Tundra (my 2nd), he has seperation anxiety and cannot be left alone for long periods whereas my other dog doesn't so I had two sides of the coin to deal with.  They both get on great together (although they didn't at first!).  Nanuk has a new bounce in her step.......she has become more lively and mischevious!  Her idea of fun is stealing hubby's slipper and both of them chewing opposite ends!  Needless to say, hubby doesn't find this as cute as I do!!!!

I have 2 at the moment although 1 of them is around 100 by now, i am looking at getting another but still debating, my pup loves other dogs and loves to play, we have had 2 dogs among many other animals for a few years now with no major problems :-D

Think you need to have time to give them individual training sessions as its hard to train 2 dogs together. My pal has 3 and was just saying tonight that her little cocker needs more lead waling practice as he pulls, and she feels its due to less time training alone compared to her first rescue dog who walks to heel nicely. Mind you her second rescue needed a lot of work so that possibly explains the wee one. That would all depend on the age gap, standard achieved and what your final goals are.

Ive only got one dog and would love another but keep thinking Morse isnt well trained enough yet, or fear not having enough time to make him still feel special etc. He'd love a partner in crime and it would be Grand Theft Cat'n Rabbit :D

I have two dogs but it wasnt really though choice as there is only about a year between them and would have preferred to wait longer.  The new pup unfortunately was the runt and was going to be drowned so we rescued him.  We do take as many walks as possible singularly and quite often my OH will go in one direction with the older one and I will take pup with me.  It helps to build up the bond better and also means that they dont bond with the other dog whilst completely ignoring you.  It is hard work but the boys do love being together and I dont regret it a single day.
